AN EVALUATION OF CAMEL RATING SYSTEM AS A MEASURE OF BANK PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF SELECTED BANKS
ABSTRACT
This project is meant to evaluate CAMEL Rating system as a measure of Bank
performance of seven (7) selected Banks over a period of time from 1994-1998.
The Banks chosen are first Bank of Nigeria Plc, Intercity Bank Plc, United Bank for
Africa Plc, Savannah Bank of Nigeria Plc, Lion Bank of Nigeria Plc, Bank of the North
Limited and Cooperative Bank Plc. The choice of the seven Commercial Banks with similar
Operations was to compare the performance of one against another for the period under
review.
The CAMEL Rating system actually showed the performance of the Banks over
period and comparism was made of the performance of the peer group within the Industry.
To a greater extent all the seven Banks performed very sound throughout the period under
consideration.
Finally, conclusion and recommendations have been drawn based on the discoveries
made in the study.
