CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

The conventional wisdom holds that computers are mechanical or electrical devices capable of processing large amounts of raw data very quickly when given specific instructions by humans. Society relies on this tool. From the secretarial profession to the processing of packages, it is a regular sight in the office.

Computing, according to this definition, is the act of feeding data into an electronic device that then processes it in accordance with a predefined set of instructions, or program, and outputs the result.

Stephen Dorsey claims that the word processing notion of the 1970s specifically referred to the employment of machinery for “breaking down secretaries,” rather than machinery in se. Separate the work into its component parts; for example, some employees may only type, while others may provide administrative assistance.

Most executives wouldn’t need private secretaries in a normal operation; instead, one secretary would handle a variety of administrative duties for three or more secretaries.

The national secretaries association, which defends secretaries as individuals who “can assume responsibility without direct supervision,” was concerned that word processing would turn secretaries into “space-age typing pools,” according to a 1971 article.

On the other hand, some secretaries see word processing as a way to advance in their careers, while others believe it will lead to a picket line.
