AN INVESTIGATION OF STUDENT KNOWLEDGE ON CLIMATIC CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION IN SOME SELECTED SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The study looks on students’ awareness of climate change and environmental preservation in Surulere and the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The study sought to investigate students’ understanding of environmental concepts and climatic change, whether there is a gender difference in student knowledge of climatic change, and whether the type of school (public or private) attended and the location of the school (urban or rural) have any bearing on student knowledge of climate change and environmental issues.

The study was conducted in eight public senior secondary schools in Surulere and the Lagos mainland local government area of Lagos State.

Data was acquired by administering a student questionnaire with questions about climate change and environmental issues. Data analysis was conducted, and the following findings were made:

i. Students have limited awareness of climatic change and environmental preservation because they struggle to understand these topics.

ii. Gender differences occur in students’ awareness of climate change and environmental protection.

iii. There is a strong correlation between students’ understanding of climate change and environmental preservation and their school location (rural or urban).

Based on the findings, certain recommendations were given.

· The government can benefit the community by encouraging environmental education and raising awareness.

Science teachers should be trained with a clear aim and grasp of new strategies for climate change and environmental challenges.
