AN ONLINE WEB APPLICATION FOR NEWS AROUND THE SCHOOL
CHAPITRE ONE
INTRODUCTION IN GENERAL
1.0 Introduction
When it comes to computer technology and communication, the phrase “online” refers to a computer that is linked to a network. Computers on a network can share resources such as hardware, software, data, and information.
A server is in charge of controlling network resource access. (2006) (Shelly, Cashman, Vermaat). A computer system that permits online users to exchange and receive information is referred to as an online system (Publishing Dictionary, 2011).
Nowadays, practically every organisation relies heavily on an internet infrastructure. One significant advantage of having an online system is that it allows you to perform things whenever and wherever you want as long as you have an Internet connection.
Today’s university system has a rising demand for an effective, dependable, and accessible computerised information management system. As a result, the importance of a computerised system cannot be overstated.
1.1 AIM
The project effort aims to create a functional online application for the department where students may access information about past, present, and future events taking place inside the department.
The suggested system will handle information distribution inside the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.
1.2 Objectives Of The Study
The project’s goal is to provide an up-to-date computerised online news portal system via which students in computer science and information technology can learn about past, current, and future events taking place in the department.
The study’s aims are as follows:
1) Provide Information: Online news portals provide the public with information on a variety of topics such as politics, social issues, sports, education, science, and entertainment.
2) teach People: In addition to providing information, online news portals teach people about the social and political structures. People gather to learn about the impending issues and how to deal with them.
3) Instant & Up-to-Date News: Online news portals have made up-to-date news available with a single click. People all over the world can get a minute update with a single click.
4) News by Interest: Everyone has different interests. Some people are interested in politics, while others are interested in sports or entertainment. Web media does not operate on the bullet theory. People have a plethora of possibilities from which to pick. They can read the news according on their interests.
5) Simple to Use: Online news portals are simple to use. Today, 66% of individuals own smartphones and use them exclusively to access the internet. People may stay up to speed with the newest news wherever they go.
6) Live Sports Coverage: Online news portals provide live sports coverage. News websites do not let sports lovers down, whether it is a cricket event or a tennis championship. Fans may stay up to current on the scores while at work.
7) Simple input Receiver: Collecting input from readers or viewers is a difficult process for traditional media. However, for web media, it is not a difficult nut to crack. The comment function on news portals allows readers to provide input.
Even news websites can receive feedback on their breaking news. It is a two-way conversation. People can readily share their thoughts and criticism.
8) Coverage of breaking news in real time: News websites provide real-time coverage of breaking news. People cannot wait till the next morning for news or remain in front of the television all day to watch breaking news.
All of these obstacles have been knocked down by Web 2 media. People may access news on their phones wherever they go.
9) News event photos: People can view exclusive photos of news events.
A portal, often known as portal software, is a Web-based tool that connects audiences, applications, systems, and processes to create a centralised collaboration experience.
Portal software integrates technology to create personalised work environments and communities, increasing user productivity. Portal software is designed for a variety of purposes, including corporate intranets, extranets, communities, Web sites, and projects, to mention a few.
Using portal software in any context can provide numerous benefits depending on the type of business demands and the portal software. Some of the advantages are as follows (Chozam, 2006):
Increase productivity for end users by providing customizable features and development tools. Increase interaction between customers and employees by providing personalised environments for end users. Integration of external applications and services via portlets.
1.3 Significance Of The Research
The following are the project’s significances:
Quickly and easily publishes and controls an online news magazine.
Full-featured and ready to use right now – “off-the-shelf”
Low Total Cost of Ownership – Low startup and training costs, as well as ongoing low operational costs
A flexible content management system that may be used to publish a wide range of information, including online newspapers, press releases, reports and papers, dissertations, and so on.
3 A portal gives Internet users a single, personalised access point to a network-based campus. In the context of higher education, the most interesting portals are horizontal, that is, they are meant to provide access to nearly everything that an individual user linked with the campus requires to manage his or her connection with the University.
Users may include students, instructors, staff, parents, prospective students, alumni, and members of the general public.
1.4 Scope Of The Study
The scope of this project work is primarily focused on online news portals, with Kebbi State University of Science and Technology Aliero (Computer Science and Information Technology Department) serving as a case study.
1.5 Limitations Of The Study
This project task, like any other software development method, has constraints. The following factors significantly hampered project work:
Financial constraints: a study of this sort is intended to be carried out on a larger scale, but due to a shortage of funding, various functions and programmes could not be implemented.
Time constraint: During the study, time was a major issue in carrying out the test. The time frame for carrying out this investigation was limited.
Non-availability of materials: Due to limited internet services, some key documents and materials were unavailable over the duration of this investigation.
1.6 Analysis Of Chapters
This report was written to provide detailed information on the research I conducted while compiling this project effort.
4
The project work is based on five study chapters.
The first chapter introduces the project work, limitations of the study, scope of the study, significance of the study, and objectives of the study.
The second chapter is a survey of the literature on the project work, which covers the information system in the academic system, a discussion on data and information, the information system and an overview of databases, and those who have contributed to the area of research.
The third chapter discusses the methodology employed in the research endeavour, including data collection methods. It analyses both the existing and the proposed new systems, highlighting various issues with the old system. It also analyses the new system’s benefits and drawbacks.
The fourth chapter is on system design and implementation. This covers the work’s input and output specifications, the programming language used in producing the application, software testing, integration, and implementation,
system requirements for compatible software use, and lastly how the software can be used.
The summary, conclusion, and recommendations of the study are covered in Chapter Five of the project work.
