ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis is one of the most serious communicable illnesses in the world. It is the second greatest cause of mortality globally, killing over 2 million people each year in Nigeria. Noncompliance with tuberculosis therapy in an irregular and inconsistent manner has increased the likelihood of treatment failure, relapse, and the development of drug-resistant tuberculosis strains. There are several reasons why patients fail to take their prescriptions. The Centres for Disease Control (2008) states the following: The patient’s objection is that drugs must be taken on an empty stomach to ensure absorption. This might be tough for patients to follow, especially waking up an hour earlier than usual each day merely to take medicine on an empty stomach. Another complaint is about the size of the tablet. Drug side effects can cause people to stop taking their medications. Patients refuse to take their treatment due to issues such as denial, stigmatisation, emotional suffering, cultural and lifestyle problems. Poverty, transportation, religion, and the attitude of health staff all contribute to patients’ noncompliance with tuberculosis treatment. Noncompliance of patients with tuberculosis treatment is a serious problem for national tuberculosis control programs in states because this case tends to have a higher morbidity and mortality rate than those who are not cured, and they remain infected for a longer period of time, allowing the affected patient to continue transmitting the disease in the community.
