ANALYSIS OF POVERTY STATUS OF FOREST DWELLERS IN COASTAL COMMUNITIES

ABSTRACT

This study examined the poverty levels of forest dwellers in coastal areas in Ondo State, Nigeria. Ten towns were selected at random from Ondo State’s coastline region. Two sets of structured questionnaires were distributed to ten randomly selected respondents in each of the two local government areas visited.

The study found that 60% of respondents in both groups had no formal schooling. In Okitipupa, 50% of respondents earn ₦80,000-₦100,000, while 44% in Ese-odo earn between ₦60,000-₦80,000 a year. This study also revealed that 38% and 36% of respondents in the Ese-odo and Okitipupa communities, respectively, face travel issues.

The Lorenz curve in the study shows the cumulative income share against the percentage of forest residents, indicating income inequality among respondents. The government should assist in the development of good roads and health care facilities in the study area’s rural communities.

This will help to ease the transportation difficulty that many forest inhabitants in the research region confront. Many of the responders who are experiencing health issues will benefit from having access to improved health care if health centres are established.
