ABSTRACT

Over the years companies have witnessed series of accidents in the stores, since meeting accidents in the store has a lot of cost implication, the key problem of this study is to enquire into the major causes of accident and lay safety consciousness in the organization and store in particular. As a result of the above of aims hypothesis were stated. The key purpose being to prevent all potential accident at work and to analyze hazard, risks and give strategies to avoid existing and future occurrence. This work was effectively engineered using a questionnaire, personal interviews, and statistical data provided by John Holt Plc Port Harcourt. Tables were utilised to analyse the data where applicable, and chi-square was employed to test the hypotheses. A number of conclusions were reached, the most important of which is that the organisation benefits greatly from the proper implementation of safety regulations in stores. Finally, inferences were taken from the findings, and appropriate recommendations were proposed. These conclusions are also valid if the assumptions given hold up. However, one major conclusion is that not every organisation prioritises safety, and it is recommended that organisations establish an overall health and safety philosophy as well as specific health and safety rules for the organisation.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Cases involving retail accidents are heavily influenced by the materials in the store, how store personnel do their daily responsibilities, and the store’s atmosphere. Accidents do not just happen; they are caused by errors of omission or commission.

It is consequently the responsibility of management to remove all known and possible causes of accidents from the workplace, analyse hazards and risks as needed, and prescribe actions to avoid current and future occurrences. Every year, a large number of working days are lost due to work-related accidents.

As a result, management should provide a complete health and safety policy statement to his staff. The company’s policy will then help people become more aware of the hazards and risks associated with working in stores.

The ultimate goal of the company’s policy is to save lives at work, reduce accidents, and raise safety awareness and consciousness about materials, equipment, and the environment in order to eliminate operational wasted time, pain, and suffering.

When implemented, the regulations will serve to protect the safety of all store personnel while performing their tasks, as well as other customers entering the business.
