Appraisal Of The Level Of Attainment Of Millennium Development Goal Five (Maternal Health) In North Central Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The study sought to assess the level of achievement of MDG-5 (maternal health) in North Central Nigeria. The study is being conducted in this location because to the region’s endemic nature in terms of maternal mortality rates, which are projected to be 1549 per 100,000 live births.

To study this issue, six research questions were developed to establish the extent to which family planning, prenatal, and postnatal services were provided at NCN.

The study also determines the tactics implemented to reduce childbearing adolescent birth rates, the availability of qualified health staff, and the level of maternal death rate reduction in NCN.

Three null hypotheses were developed to lead the investigation and tested at an alpha level of 0.05. The study used an evaluative design and included 10,610 participants: 1,315 doctors, 6,039 nurses, 1,739 midwives, and 1,517 expectant/nursing moms.

A total of 1070 respondents were recruited from the population utilising a multi-stage selection approach, purposive, proportionate, and simple random sampling procedures. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire instrument known as the maternal health questionnaire (MAHEQ).

It was face validated by three professionals and trial tested, yielding an overall reliability value of 0.83 using Cronbach alpha. The collected data was analysed using mean, standard deviation, and percentages. The real limit of acceptable responses was 2.50-3.49 and above. The three null hypotheses were tested using ANOVA with an alpha level of 0.05.

The study found that family planning, prenatal care, and postnatal care services were widely provided in North Central Nigeria. The study’s findings also suggest that methods for reducing adolescent birth rates were widely implemented and rated in North Central Nigeria.

This finding indicates that significant effort was made to reduce the high maternal mortality ratio. There was a shortage of competent health staff. This result indicates a degree of difficulty in achieving the desired 75% reduction by 2015.

However, the maternal mortality rate decreased significantly between 2005 and 2013. Based on the above results, the following recommendations were made:

more medical personnel should be recruited, enlightenment campaigns should be intensified to show the advantages of MH services, continuous training of medical personnel on various methods of contraceptive use and administration for optimum service delivery should be intensified, introduction of sex education through outreach programs to help adolescents, and improving laboratory facilities.
