APPRAISAL OF THE QUALITY OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION DURING 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS
Chapter one
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political communication is a subfield of political science and communication that studies the creation, diffusion, transmission, and impact of information, both through media and interpersonally, in a political setting.
This includes studying the media, analysing speeches by politicians and anyone attempting to influence the political process, and formal and informal talks among members of the public, among other things.
The media serves as a link between government and the public. Political communication is the study and practice of strategies and means of expressing political ideas.
In Political Communication in America, Robert E. Denton and Gary C. Woodward, two key contributors to the topic, define it as the methods and objectives of message senders to impact the political environment.
This includes public discussion (e.g., political speeches, news media coverage, and ordinary people’ conversations) on who has the ability to sanction, how public resources are allocated, who makes decisions,
and societal meanings such as what makes someone American. According to the authors, “the crucial factor that makes communication ‘political’ is not the source of a message, but its content and purpose.”
David L. Swanson and Dan Nimmo, both important members of this sub-discipline, define political communication as “the strategic use of communication to influence public knowledge, beliefs, and action on political matters.” They emphasise the strategic aspect of political communication and the importance of persuasion in political discourse.
Brian McNair offers a similar definition, stating that political communication is “purposeful communication about politics.” McNair believes that this includes not just spoken or written comments, but also visual manifestations such as clothes, make-up, haircut, and logo design.
In other words, it comprises all of the components that contribute to the formation of a “political identity” or “image”. Reflecting on the relationship between political communication and contemporary agenda-building, Vian Bakir defines Strategic Political Communication (SPC) as ‘political communication that is manipulative in intent,
that utilises social scientific techniques and heuristic devices to understand human motivation, human behaviour, and the media environment, to inform effectively what should be communicated – encompassing its detail and overall direction, and what
Many academic departments and schools across the world specialise in political communication. These programmes are housed in many programmes, including communication, journalism, and political science. The study of political communication is clearly multidisciplinary.
Political communication is an interactive process that involves the exchange of information between politicians, the news media, and the general public. The process moves downward from governing institutions to citizens, horizontally between political players, and upward from public opinion to authorities.
1.2 Statement of Problem
During the 2015 governorship election in Enugu State, as in other regions of Nigeria, politicians made a variety of promises to the public in order to sell their parties and the candidates running on their platforms.
That advertising was given does not necessarily suggest that it was received, nor does it imply that it was understood and accepted as true,
so that it influenced the behaviour of the electorate in Enugu State during the governorship election. Or were there any intervening elements in the communication process? Given the foregoing, the study decided to analyse the quality of political communication during the 2015 general election.
