ASSESSING LOCAL GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION AS AN INSTRUMENT OF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Development at the Local Level

A local government is a semi-autonomous territorial unit established by a state’s constitution or general laws to carry out specific functions within a designated or limited geographical area. Local government is established in Nigeria to bring the government closer to the people.

Thus, this research project evaluates local government administration as a tool for grassroots development in Nigeria, utilising Bwari Local Government Area as a case study.

The first chapter of the study serves as an introduction to the future chapters. Following the study’s background, the problem statement and the study’s purpose, which formed the foundation for the study’s importance and the hypothesis, were stated. The study’s weaknesses were also noted.

The works of numerous authors, as well as foreign and local periodicals, were evaluated in chapter two to elicit perspectives on local government administration as an instrument of grass-root development in Nigeria.

The third chapter examined research methodology, population description, and data gathering sampling procedures. Methods for designing questionnaires, determining sample size, and distributing questionnaires were also discussed.

The fourth chapter was based on data analysis. This chapter was separated into three sections: data analysis, hypothesis testing, and summary. The percentage table, image, and narration were used with care to ensure adequate understanding and testing of the hypothesis.

Finally, chapter five was separated into three sections: findings summary, recommendations, and conclusion.
