ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of Covid-19 on the education of early childhood sandwich students at Holy Child College of Education in Takoradi.

The following aims were used to successfully find the study: Is there any effect of covid19 on early childhood education sandwich students in Holy Child College of Education Takoradi, Is there any preventive measures?

Research on covid19 and the obstacles that Holy Child College of Education Takoradi encountered during covid19. The study provided insight on covid19 prevention measures and also advised the school to increase desk spacing, vary arrival and dismissal hours, limit non-essential visitors, and use a separate health office location for children with flu-like symptoms.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The threats we confront grow in proportion to how linked the globe has become. The COVID-19 pandemic has not ended at national borders. It has afflicted people of all nationalities, educational levels, incomes, and genders. However, the same cannot be said for the repercussions, which have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable.

A few months ago, the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) proclaimed the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on January 30, 2020, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. In 2019, there was concern about the effects of a US-China trade war, the US presidential elections, and Brexit on the global economy.

As a result, the IMF anticipated moderate global growth of 3.4%. However, COVID-19, a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a unique strain of coronavirus from the SARS species, altered the situation unexpectedly. Education is not an exception.

Students from wealthy homes, who are encouraged by their parents and willing to learn, may be able to locate alternative learning alternatives beyond the school doors.

Those from poor backgrounds were frequently shut out when their schools closed. This issue has exposed many deficiencies and injustices in our education systems, ranging from access to broadband and computers required for online education, to the supportive surroundings required to focus on learning, to the misalignment of resources with needs.

COVID-19 lockdowns have disrupted traditional schooling, resulting in widespread school closures, the bulk of which continue at least 10 weeks. While the educational community has worked hard to provide learning continuity during this time, children and students have had to rely more on their own resources to continue learning remotely via the Internet, television, or radio.

Teachers were also required to adapt to new pedagogical concepts and ways of instruction for which they may not have been educated. Learners in the most marginalised groups, in particular, are at danger of falling behind because they lack access to digital learning tools or the resilience and engagement required to learn on their own time.

Worldwide, Covid-19 has driven the early childhood education system to the brink of collapse, prompting prominent early childhood organisations to lobby for Covid-19 finance packages to defend early education programs (NAEYC 2020; Zero to Three 2020).

According to medical study, Covid-19 is not a “children’s disease” because, to yet, there have been few verified occurrences of the coronavirus in children, and the death rate among children who get the disease has been relatively low (Spaull 2020).

However, when we evaluate all elements of young children’s development, the tremendous consequences of this global pandemic become clear. Covid-19 not only halted normal childhood activities like as attending school, engaging with extended family and friends, playing outside, and exploring nature, but it also interrupted the socio-emotional gains that come from children participating in these activities.

According to scholars, we are currently “participants in the biggest unplanned experiment that education has ever seen in our lifetimes” (Thomas and Rogers 2020, unpaged). Whether or not Covid-19 remains a novel virus, almost every article or book chapter on the subject is scheduled for publication in 2020.

Based on this context, the researcher wishes to evaluate the impact of Covid-19 on the education of early childhood sandwich students: a case study of Holy Child College of Education Takoradi.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In terms of early childhood education, the international health crisis has caused unprecedented, far-reaching, and dramatic changes in the lives of children and their families, preservice and in-service instructors of young children, and early childhood educator.

The study aims to determine the impact of covid-19 on early childhood schooling.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study’s aims are:

To determine the influence of covid19 on early childhood education in Holy Child College of Education Takoradi

The study aims to identify preventive measures for COVID-19 and the problems encountered by Holy Child College of Education

1.4. Takoradi during the pandemic.

The research question is

Is there any impact of Covid19 on early childhood education sandwich students at Holy Child College of Education Takoradi?

Is there any way to prevent COVID-19?

Are there any problems for Holy Child College of Education Takoradi during Covid19?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following have been proposed for testing.

H0: Covid-19 has no significant effect on early childhood education sandwich students at Holy Child College of Education Takoradi.

H1: Covid19 has a strong effect on early childhood education sandwich students at Holy Child College of Education Takoradi.

H0: there are no preventive measures for covid19.

H2: There is a preventative measure for Covid19.

H0: Holy Child College of Education Takoradi faces no challenges during COVID-19.

H3: Holy Child College of Education Takoradi faces obstacles during COVID-19.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will provide a clear understanding of the impact of covid19 on the education of early childhood sandwich students. The study will be extremely beneficial to students and the Ministry of Education.

The study will also provide insights into covid19 prevention measures in schools. The study will also act as a reference for other researchers who would engage on the similar issue.

1.7 Scope and limitations of the investigation

The scope of the investigation includes Assessing the Impact of Covid-19 on Early Childhood Sandwich Students: A Case Study of Holy Child College of Education Takoradi.

1.8 Limitations of the Study 

The researcher faces certain constraints that limit the scope of the investigation, including:

The researcher has insufficient research material, which limits the investigation.

The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must integrate other academic activities and examinations with the investigation.

Insufficient funds tend to hamper the researcher’s efficiency in accessing important resources, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).

1.8 Study Delimitation

Due to funding and time constraints, the scope of this study has been confined to the full faculty of Holy Child College of Education Takoradi.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Covid19 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus.

The majority of patients who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and will recover on their own.

 

Early childhood education. Early childhood education (ECE; often known as nursery education) is a branch of educational philosophy concerned with the formal and informal teaching of children from birth to the age of eight. ECE is also a professional designation obtained through a postsecondary education program.

Takoradi’s geographical area.

Sekondi-Takoradi is a city that combines the twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi. It serves as the capital of Ghana’s Western Region and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly. Sekondi-Takoradi is the region’s main city, as well as an industrial and economic hub, with a population of 445,205 (2012).

The main industries of Sekondi-Takoradi include lumber, cocoa processing, plywood, shipbuilding, harbour and railway repair, and, more recently, sweet crude oil and crude oil. The primary occupation in Sekondi-Takoradi is fishing. Sekondi-Takoradi is on the main railway route between Kumasi and Accra.

Sekondi-Takoradi’s populace is predominantly Christian. 35% of the territory is Pentecostal/Charismatic, 26% are Protestant, and 14% are Catholic, with the remaining 12% made up of other minor faiths.

9% of the population is Muslim, 3.5% are non-religious, and 0.2% follow traditional African religions. The Ahanta people make up the majority of the population in Sekondi.
