ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER IN THE PROMOTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study.

The community newspapers play a vital role in our society. They give information and entertainment while also possessing persuasive skills capable of bringing about drastic change.

As a result, the importance of community newspapers in the growth and promotion of our culture, morality, and communal life cannot be overstated. Today, we are surrounded by mass media. Because of the enormous rise of mass media in recent years, it has become a natural part of everyday life.

However, the community newspaper should not be taken for granted; each individual should become conscious of how they impact the shaping of his or her own self and the environment in which he or she lives.

Every society’s single most important goal is development. Even advanced countries yearn for additional progress. Essentially, development refers to the goal to improve or move towards improving the quality of life of a specific society or community’s inhabitants (Konkwo, 2010).

And what happens throughout development is that a more active system is established, latent relationships are awakened, and elements that were before isolated become interconnected and capable of bringing about huge advances in future activity and productivity.

This encompasses the social and cultural growth of that society, including the number of different forms of changes (in society), ranging from the very specific concept of economic expansion to industrialisation, urbanisation, increases in literacy rates, and so on.

When discussing the function of the community newspaper in the promotion of cultural heritage, one is generally referring to the media’s roles in persuading people to embrace and practise changes in attitudes and behaviour that will lead to development.

Culture can be related to tradition, which is a belief, concept, or way of life that people in a specific society or group have long practiced. A culture or custom appears to exist in a group indefinitely, maybe because it is passed on from one generation to the next by traditional forms of communication.

Because cultural beliefs are passed down from generation to generation, there is a desire to wonder how the process will continue once the old and elderly are extinct (Myers, 2000). This is where communication comes into play, ensuring that culture flows from generation to generation.

Many of the societal changes we see today can be attributed in part to neighbourhood newspapers. The mass media’s ability to supply seemingly uninterrupted news has had a significant impact on communal life, indigenous culture, and morals.
