Assessment Of Electronic Waste Management Disposal In Onitsha Main Market

Abstract

This study assessed the disposal of electronic garbage in Onitsha’s main market. Electronic garbage or e-waste refers to abandoned electrical or electronic gadgets.

E-waste includes used electronics that are going to be refurbished, reused, resold, salvage recycled through material recovery, or disposed of. Informal e-waste processing in underdeveloped countries has the potential to harm human health and pollute the environment.

The study adopts a quantitative descriptive research approach to investigate electronic trash disposal in Onitsha’s main market. The information for this study was gathered from both secondary and primary sources.

These include existent or published documents such as gazettes, books, journals, and registers. Secondary sources are secondhand information gathered from other people’s research projects. Secondary data for this investigation came from published materials. The key data sources for this study were personal observation, personal interviews, and direct observations.

This study used stratified sampling to determine the sample populations that were interviewed. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed throughout the research region. However, 365 questionnaires (92%) were returned. It was discovered that negative disposal attitudes are common in Onitsha’s main market.

The survey highlighted inadequate electronic waste disposal attitudes among households as a major hindrance to an efficient solid waste management system in Onitsha’s main market.

As a result, the city’s sanitary conditions have deteriorated, resulting in indiscriminate waste disposal, which has formed mountains in several areas.
