The study was conducted to evaluate Cross River State, Nigeria’s literacy initiatives’ effectiveness for women’s emancipation. When doing the research, three
To direct the investigation, three null hypotheses and research questions were devised. The much
conducted study using survey research methodology. The Population of the study comprises of
19,256 women that registered in functional literacy initiatives in Cross River State.
The sample of the study was 750 women. The device for data collecting was a 32-
piece structured questionnaire titled: Assessment of Functional Literacy Programmes
for Women Empowerment in Cross River State Questionnaire (AFLPWECRSQ). The
tool for the study was face validated by three specialists. The internal consistency
of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha reliability technique whereby
produced correlations of 0.65 for vocational skills, 0.59 for fundamental health behaviours and
0.65 for ICT skills for empowering women. The data for the study were acquired with
the support of 9 research assistants. The 721 copies of the questionnaire administered to
the replies, were totally filled and retrieved showing 100 % rate of
return. The data collected were evaluated using mean and standard deviation for
answering the study questions whereas t-test statistics was employed to test the null
hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Based on the data analysed, the study found
essential vocational skills, fundamental health practices and Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) skills are to a lesser level supplied in the vocational institutions for
empowering the women in Cross River State. There were significant (p<0.05)
variations in the mean scores of the responses of urban and rural women on 16 out
of the 32 items whilst there were no significant (p<0.05) differences on the
remaining 16 items. Based on the following findings, the study among others
stated that ggovernment should improve the physical, infrastructural and
organizational norms of vocational institutions for women empowerment through
greater funding, enhance involvement of international donor agencies in the health
intervention strategies for enhanced health care for women and that women
should be encouraged to create cooperative groups so that they can be trained and
empowered as a group with necessary occupational, health and ICT skills for productive
living.
