ASSESSMENT OF INTERNET COMPETENCY AMONG STUDENTS OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The global internet penetration has reached over 3.4 billion, with Nigeria ranking seventh. This study examines internet competency among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the University of Lagos and Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos.
The internet is home to a plethora of academic databases such as Google Scholar, Google Book, Wikipedia, encyclopedias, and a plethora of research pages and libraries, to name a few.
In fact, almost everything on academic can be accessed for free or for a fee (freemium). The survey research method was used, along with 100 copies of questionnaires that were distributed to 100 respondents drawn from the selected higher education institutions using a simple random sampling technique.
However, the collected data was analyzed and interpreted using basic statistics (Frequency and percentage method with tables). As a form of descriptive statistics.
It is recommended that all tertiary institutions make ICT or computer a mandatory course, and that there be a provision for wireless internet access on campus, with students expected to use the internet for gain rather than vice.
