ASSESSMENT OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL PRACTICES IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
ABSTRACT
This study was conducted on “Assessment of Solid Waste Disposal Practices in Majidadi ‘B’ Ward in the Bauchi metropolis” with the goal of assessing the nature and methods used by the area’s users, which was first carried out through a survey with the use of structured questionnaires to some people chosen from the study area.
There were 152 questionnaires distributed, and 84.87% of them were filled out. The data was analysed using a frequency table, with percentages of replies distributed using a pie chart.
According to the data analysed, 57.36% have no knowledge of appropriate trash disposal techniques, whereas the remaining percentages have learnt about them from environmental officials, the media, or other agencies.
The results also show that kitchen garbage, wood and ashes, and clothing account for the highest percentages of waste generated, at 23.26%, 21.71%, and 17.05%, respectively. 43.41% of garbage created is collected in open containers before disposal, 19.38% in dustbins, and 12.40% in trash cans.
Adequate and proper waste disposal facilities are vitally needed, since just 3.87% opined on the presence of incinerators, while the majority of 55.87% believe landfills are filthy.
This investigation indicated that trash disposal procedures in Majidadi ‘B” ward are inadequate and unhealthy, highlighting the need for specific solutions to assist improve the issue.
30.23% of households believed that the government was responsible for transporting waste from houses to disposal sites; yet, waste is rarely disposed of by the entities in charge, which could be due to a lack of equipment and funding.
The study determined that most households generate a large amount of waste that is not properly disposed of, either because they do not know which disposal method to use or are uninformed of the problems that incorrect disposal might entail, endangering human health and the environment.
It is therefore recommended that public awareness of the health consequences of improper waste disposal be increased, and that a massive campaign to promote awareness of proper waste disposal practices be organised. If these measures are taken, the government will be able to enforce laws and penalties for improper disposal.
