Assessment Of The Harmful Cultural Practices Affecting The Health Of Rural Women

ABSTRACT

Harmful cultural practices have been recognised as major sources of disability and mortality, particularly among women of reproductive age in underdeveloped nations.

As a result, the researcher undertook this study to identify harmful cultural practices (HCPs) influencing women’s health in Ebonyi State, with community women’s organisations serving as the target population.

To drive this investigation, five research questions were asked, and three null hypotheses were developed and tested at the 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey design was used in this investigation.

The population for this study consisted of 11,424 members of 327 registered community-based women’s organisations across the thirteen Local Government Areas that form Ebonyi State’s three senatorial districts. The sample comprised of sixty-five purposefully selected community-based organisations with 1,962 registered members taken from six of the thirteen LGAs chosen for the study.

The study adopted a multi-stage sampling technique. The sample was drawn from 40% of the total population of Ebonyi State’s purposively selected local government areas. For qualitative data, a systematic sample size of twelve women from each group of Community Based Organisations was employed for Focus Group Discussion (FGD).

A questionnaire with 122 items on the Assessment of Harmful Cultural Practices (AHCPs) organised into five sections was created, verified, and utilised for quantitative data collecting. The researcher created a Focus Group Discussion Guide (FGDG) based on the five study topics to collect data.

The data collected were evaluated using percentages, weighted averages, and standard deviation. The focus group discussions were qualitatively evaluated. Among the most significant findings was that the majority of respondents were educationally disadvantaged. (2) The study confirmed that negative cultural practices such as early marriage, female genital mutilation, widowhood, and nutritional taboos existed and were practiced in many places.

Respondents to the questionnaire had similar opinions to the discussants during the (F G D) sessions. It was suggested, among other things, that women be given educational opportunities.

This would allow them to challenge the discriminatory attitudes and cultural practices that have kept them captive, such as not participating in decision-making processes regarding their welfare

which has prevented them from being integrated into the full range of community development programs. Women’s educational empowerment will lead to their social, economic, and political empowerment.
