ASSESSMENT OF THE MANAGEMENT OF GARBAGE COLLECTION AND WASTE DISPOSAL

ABSTRACT

Poor waste management has been a serious issue in human existence, affecting both rural and urban places. Various trash disposal methods exist, and this study evaluated waste management practices among people of Owerri State, Imo State, Nigeria. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study in which a total of 282

Owerri State people were chosen using a multi-stage sample procedure and interviewed using self-administered questionnaires. The results showed that 90% of respondents were aware of trash management, and 97.5% had a positive attitude towards it. Food residues (97.1%) and vegetable products (95.4%) accounted for the majority of household garbage.

Residents also engage in poor waste management techniques, such as open dumping (66.3%) and burning (62.4%). The most typical mode of waste transportation to the final disposal site was a wheelbarrow. Gender and educational position had a substantial impact on respondents’ knowledge, attitude, and behaviour of waste management (p 0.05).

Good waste management is critical to maintaining healthy living conditions in any area. Residents of Owerri require health education, regular garbage collection services, and designated final dump locations. These will promote strict adherence to proper and suitable waste management methods among them.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Waste management refers to the collection, transportation, processing, or disposal of waste materials, as well as their management and monitoring. The phrase often refers to materials created by human activity, and the procedure is usually carried out to lessen their impact on health, the environment, or aesthetics.

The primary focus of this research is on waste management strategies found in urban developing countries. Waste covers any goods that people no longer need and either wish to dispose of or have already discarded, such as packing materials, yard waste, old paint containers, vegetables, metals, etc.

Poor waste management has been a serious issue for human health and survival, affecting both rural and urban communities. A clean environment promotes excellent health, which in turn increases human productivity.

As a result, it is possible to conclude that a healthy and clean environment has a direct impact on the nation’s wealth and economic status.
