Assessment Of Women’s Participation In Community Development Projects In Nsukka Local Government Area Of Enugu State
ABSTRACT
This study. The extent to which women participate in community development projects in Enugu State’s Nsukka Local Government Area has been assessed. The study was led by five research questions and two hypotheses. The study’s population was 4200, and the sample size was 420 utilising proportionate stratified random sampling.
The instrument employed was a fixed response questionnaire. The study questions were analysed using frequency, percentage, and weighted mean, and the hypotheses were tested using the t-test at a significance level of 0.05.
The study’s findings revealed that the respondents are mostly fixed-income earners, that the majority of the projects listed were carried out by Nsukka women, that women’s participation in most areas of project implementation is low
that there are numerous constraints to effective participation in community development projects, and that the majority of the factors listed increase participation in community development projects among Nsukka women.
There was no significant difference in the mean ratings of fixed-income earners and non-fixed-income earners on four items of participation level, and no significant difference on five items.
There was no significant difference in the mean rating of literate and illiterate women’s responses on six items related to level of engagement, although there was a significant difference on three.
The main conclusion is that women will be unable to fully utilise the available human and material resources to complete the project effectively. The major recommendations were: awareness of programs should be organised through seminars and workshops to sensitise women on the issues of self-help projects and to be aware of their rights; every member should be involved in all the processes of carrying out the projects;
leaders should be penalised when found guilty of any act of corruption; people should be educated on the effects of their practices and beliefs that hinder women from participating in the community.
The conclusion is that if all of these important proposals were practically, scientifically, and methodically implemented by our societies, particularly the Nsukka Local Government Area, women in the area would not only make enormous progress in community development project involvement.
