Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study.

Education is the best legacy a country can leave to its population. Human resource development is widely regarded as the foundation for any meaningful development. Many people believe that formal education is still the primary vehicle for social-economic growth and social mobilisation in any community.

As a result, education plays a vital role in the development of a whole person for communication and effective transactions, as well as ensuring that the individual fits properly into the schemes of life of a community.

Parents are aware of these needs, which emphasises the need of monitoring education standards in Kaduna metropolitan for the area’s development.

Education, as the key to development, has the potential to improve both teaching effectiveness and learning efficiency among students. School officials have made efforts to improve the academic performance of public secondary school students.

The school environment, which includes classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, laboratories, teacher quality, school management, teaching methods, classmates, and so on, are all factors that influence students’ academic progress (Ajayi, 2011; Oluchukwu, 2012). As a result, the school environment continues to be an important area that must be thoroughly investigated and maintained in order to improve student academic achievement.

According to Jam (2012), academic achievement is defined as the ability to study and remember things while also communicating this knowledge vocally or on paper.

In other words, academic performance relates to how students approach their studies and cope with or complete the duties assigned to them by their lecturers. There are several elements that influence the level and quality of pupils’ academic performance. (Scottk 2012).

According to Hussain (2010), secondary school students in public schools frequently come from low- and middle-income families. These families endure a variety of issues that cause emotional disturbance in their children. This one element has had a significant negative impact on secondary school pupils’ success levels.

Achievement is a pedagogical term used to determine learners’ achievement in formal education. It is measured by reports, examinations, research, and ratings, with a variety of variables exerting influence.

Essentially, the National Policy on Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2014) has identified school accomplishment contents based on whether the topics are core or elective.

The issue of poor academic performance among Nigerian kids has been of great concern to the government, parents, instructors, and even the students themselves. The quality of education is determined not only by teachers’ fulfilment of their duties, but also by the proper organisation of the school environment (Ajao 2011).

The issue of poor academic achievement among Nigerian pupils has caused widespread concern. The situation is so severe that it has resulted in a widely acknowledged decline in educational standards in Delta State and throughout Nigeria.

The quality of education is determined by how teachers do their duties. Over time, students’ academic performance in both internal and external assessments was used to determine teacher excellence (Ajao, 2011).

Teachers have been shown to have a significant impact on students’ academic achievement, as well as a critical role in educational attainment, because teachers are ultimately responsible for translating policy into action and principles based on practice during interactions with students (Afe, 2011).

Teachers are responsible for both teaching and learning, therefore it’s no surprise that a successful teacher is defined as someone who delivers desired results while doing his or her duties as a teacher.

Given governments’ significant investment in public education, the output in terms of student quality has been found to be unequal to government expenditure.

In Nigeria, there are numerous elements influencing students’ capacity to develop effective and efficient study habits. Ozmert (2005) emphasised the significance of environmental influence as a crucial factor in the formation of students’ studying habits.

In the same vein, Adetunji and Oladeji (2007) argue that most children’s environments are unsuitable for learning; as a result, some parents want their children to attend boarding school for proper discipline and to instill good reading habits.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The increasing nature of poor academic performance among public secondary school students, particularly in external examinations such as the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), tends to shift blame to teachers’ teaching methodologies and a lack of government funding to provide quality textbooks.

However, they may not be the primary reasons why students score poorly on exams. All evidence suggest that the majority of secondary school pupils have bad study habits, which may result in low academic achievement.

It has yet to accumulate sufficient research evidence to demonstrate that it is a significant component in why pupils fail. Oluchukwu (2009) emphasised the importance of the school environment on students’ academic achievement, asserting that it is a crucial component of educational planning.

The scholar went on to say that unless schools are well-suited, buildings are sufficiently created, and equipment is properly used and maintained, much teaching and learning may not occur.

When classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, and laboratories are architecturally deficient, students’ academic performance may suffer. However, little is known about how the school environment affects children’ academic achievement in a metropolitan area.

It is true that inadequate equipment provision in public secondary schools, a lack of funding, huge classrooms, and unqualified teachers, among other factors, have had an impact on Nigeria’s general educational growth. Based on the issues raised above, a study on the assessment of variables contributing to students’ poor academic performance in public secondary schools became important for examination.

1.3 Study Purpose

The primary goal of this research is to identify the factors that contribute to pupils’ low English language performance in selected senior secondary schools in Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna State.Specifically, the study is:

1. To investigate the variables contributing to pupils’ low performance in the English language.

2. To investigate the influence on students’ academic performance in secondary

schools.

3. Determine ways for dealing with students’ poor English language proficiency.

1.4 Research Questions.

The study is based on the following research questions.

1. What factors contribute to students’ low performance in English language?

2. How does poor academic achievement affect students in senior secondary schools?

3. What methods are in place to address the issue of poor English language proficiency among students?

1.5 Research Hypotheses.

The following hypotheses led the research:

1. There is no substantial association between the elements that influence students’ academic achievement in senior secondary schools.

2. There is no significant association between the problems students face and their academic success in senior secondary schools.

For individuals who desire to conduct research in a related topic.

3. There is no substantial association between differences in strategies aimed to alleviate students’ low performance in the English language.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study’s findings will be valuable to students, researchers, academics, and educators as they pursue additional research.

It is hoped that this study would provide information for parents, educators, and school administrators to consider the numerous aspects that assist kids in meeting their academic goals.

In doing so, they can look into the prospect of implementing those elements into their schools, which could lead to better educational outcomes for kids. This study is a helpful resource for other schools to reflect on the school environment and how it affects students’ academic achievement in secondary school.

It will act as a resource for anyone who wish to conduct study in a relevant topic.

1.7 Scope of Study

This study focusses on the factors that contribute to pupils’ poor English language performance in selected senior secondary schools in Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna State.

This research project includes all public secondary school pupils in the study area. It applies to instructors and students in all secondary schools in Kaduna Metropolis.

1.8 Limitations of the study

During the course of this study, the researcher experienced some restrictions. These limits include a delay in receiving data from respondents as well as teachers and students’ reluctance to fill out the questionnaire.

This survey included all secondary schools in Kaduna Metropolis. Due to the geographical distribution of the schools and the huge number of students who offer the topic in the state, a limited number of institutions were chosen.
