ATTITUDES OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS TOWARDS CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IN SOME SELECTED SPECIAL SCHOOLS
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to look into the attitudes of parents and teachers toward children with learning disabilities in some selected special schools in Ogun State. This work seeks to discover and address the attitudes of parents and teachers toward children with learning disabilities. The work also includes a review of the literature, as well as a detailed analysis of the data collected, methodology, analysis findings, summary, conclusion, recommendation, and references.
Chapter ONE
Introduction
1.1 The Study’s Background
The process of providing education to children with learning disabilities is regarded as one of the most significant challenges confronting the human community. This began as a result of the negative attitudes that prevailed against communities during the 1950s and 1960s, calling for the separation of learners with special needs from their regular peers and assignment to special classes.
Many empirical studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the separation, and it really worked, with the international community agreeing that more than 10% of school-aged children in every community suffer from at least one disability (Rocklin, 1994).
Furthermore, special education estimates that disability in developing countries reaches 15%. (Conrin, 1994).
Special education refers to a range of educational options available to students with special needs, based on the learner’s level of difficulty and the availability of special classes.
Nayak (2008) investigated both parents’ and teachers’ attitudes toward children with learning disabilities and discovered that teachers look forward to teaching these children and are prepared to face the challenges. It also states that parents discuss the issues, which aids in the implementation of effective measures to bring the children into the mainstream.
1.2 Learning Disabilities
Learning disability is a classification that encompasses several areas of functioning in which a person has difficulty learning in a typical manner, typically due to an unknown factor or factors. While the terms “learning disability” and “learning disorder” are frequently used interchangeably, they are not synonymous.
A learning disability is defined as significant learning difficulties in an academic area. These issues, however, are insufficient to warrant an official diagnosis.
A learning disorder, on the other hand, is a formal clinical diagnosis in which the individual meets specific criteria as determined by a professional (psychologist, predicatrician, etc). The distinction is in the degree, frequency, and intensity of reported symptoms and problems, and the two should not be confused.
The term “learning disabilities” refers to a group of disorders characterized by poor development of specific academic language and speech skills.
The precise causes of learning disabilities are unknown; however, these disorders are thought to be related to central nervous system dysfunction or to genetics, nutrition, and pre-birth and early childhood injury.
Although each learning disability is unique, students with learning disabilities report some common issues, such as slow and inefficient reading, slow essay writing, problems with organization and mechanics of writing, and frequent errors in math calculation.
1.2 Formulation of the Problem
Attitudes of parents and teachers toward children with learning disabilities are a challenge for any society, particularly Nigeria. Many debates, seminars, and conferences have been held to discuss this issue, but it is far from resolved.
Rather, it appears to be getting worse by the day, particularly among primary and secondary school teachers. The purpose of this research is to look into the attitudes of parents and teachers toward children with learning disabilities in a few schools in Ogun State.
1.3 The Study’s Purpose
The study’s goal is to look into the various types of learning disabilities that schoolchildren face. To educate parents and teachers on how to screen for, identify, associate, and educate the learning disabled. Also, to reduce isolation or discrimination among other children, as well as to reduce negative stereotypes about special needs children.
1.4 Research Concerns
I How would you characterize parents’ attitudes toward their children with learning disabilities?
(ii) What is the attitude of teachers toward children with learning disabilities?

(iv) What assistance does the government, teachers, and parents provide to children with learning disabilities?
