AUDITORY TRAINING’S IMPACT ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN MATHEMATICS IN ORODO, IMO STATE
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to look into the effect of auditive training on academic performance of students with hearing impairment in Imo state, Orodo. The researcher used two instruments for data collection, including a teacher-created test and a structured questionnaire.
The study’s sample size was 30 people chosen at random using simple sampling techniques. The study’s findings indicate that auditive training aided in the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. The study concluded with appropriate recommendations to the government, parents, and non-governmental organizations for proper intervention in providing these devices to hearing impaired learners in higher education institutions.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
The purpose of this study was to look into the impact of ATD on the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. To delve into this study, the researcher observed that the concept of ATD must be well understood, as well as how it affects the performance of students with hearing impairment in school.
Auditive training has been defined by various educators and professionals worldwide. Auditive training devices, in the common sense of the researchers of this study, are equipment designed to assist people with disabilities in a variety of ways, depending on the nature of the disability.
Auditive training may be used to improve the hearing abilities of the deaf, and auditive training devices for the blind may include tape recorders to record lectures and speech, as well as talking calculators when solving simple mathematical problems.
According to IDEA (International Disabilities Education Act (2004), auditive training devices are any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether purchased commercially or off the shelf modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities, including those with hearing impairment.
Hearing impairment aids, phone text messages, and other devices such as projectors are examples of ATD devices that can help the deaf learn or access information more easily than without the items mentioned. Auditive training devices are mostly technological applications in human life that help where an individual has disabilities that limit his or her educational capabilities.
It is not hearsay that ATD benefits people with disabilities, particularly those with hearing impairment. Learning can be meaningful if an individual’s sense organs are active. The senses through which information can be obtained, such as the ear, eye, nose, and so on. With the use of ATD, any individual whose hearing organ is not functioning normally is unlikely to perform satisfactorily academically.
According to the realist school of thought epistemology, an individual can know something by seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting because touching or hearing a sound (speech) for example establishes a connection between object and mind (Musa 2008).
This assertion is consistent with IDEA (2004), which states that ATD is a powerful equalizer in education and meaningful inclusion of students with disabilities, both in terms of access to the general curriculum and facilitating students’ ability to demonstrate mastery of their areas of study.
The findings of research conducted by special education professionals to improve the welfare of people with hearing impairments bring to life the application of scientific knowledge for human consumption, which is commonly referred to as technology. Technology includes instruments, machines, and devices that people create and use in their daily lives to increase the quantity and quality of products.
The use of technology to enable an individual to perform a specific task that his or her impairment prevents brings about auditive training. Auditive training is an umbrella term that refers to assistive, adoptive rehabilitative devices that people with disabilities can use to effectively perform a specific task. There are various types of auditive training that are used to improve the life of a person with disabilities.
As a result of the development and application of auditive training in teaching children with hearing impairment, they are better prepared to face life events, particularly academic performance, which is the focus of this research work. As a result, the researcher appreciates the use of auditive training in the education of students with hearing impairment.
1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT
Auditive training devices are very useful in the education of people who have hearing loss. Hearing aids are one of the most popular ATD used worldwide by those with hearing impairment to acquire information within their environment, including school, for students who have hearing problems in perceiving or receiving information through their hearing organ. Lack of information during the teaching and learning process may impede or slow the pace of hearing impaired students in the classroom.
When there is no effective classroom interaction between teachers and their students, learning does not occur, especially at the University of Jos, where there are not enough interpreters to assist the hearing impaired in acquiring information from lecturers during classes.
Since auditive training devices assist hearing impaired in acquiring information within their environment, such as school, and knowledge can be acquired through sense organs such as the ear, the researcher of this study is concerned about how students with hearing impairment will learn and perform well without the use of hearing aids, which is one of the auditive training devices used by the deaf.
The role of auditive training devices such as hearing aids in assisting hearing impaired students in gaining access to information from their teachers in the classroom is a major question that the researchers of this study wish to investigate.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The goal of this study is to look into the effect of auditory training devices on academic performance of students with hearing impairment in Imo state, with the following goals in mind:
To determine the types of auditive training that students use.
To investigate how auditive training is used to improve academic performance.
To assess the extent to which students with hearing impairment can perform academically with auditive training.
To promote the use of auditive training in educational institutions among students with hearing impairment.

1.5 THEORIES OF RESEARCH
When auditive training is used, there is no significant difference between the extent to which students with hearing impairment can perform and when there is none.
There is no significant difference in academic performance between students taught with auditive training and those who are not.
1.6 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE
The significance of this research project is to determine the effects of auditive training on improving student academic performance. The researcher will gain the following advantages:
The researcher will educate school administrators and advocate for the right to receive related services from the government and other agencies.
The lecturers will improve the instructional quality and quantitative special schools, allowing the hearing impaired to equalize as their so-called normal corner part.
The work will provide teachers with the opportunity to gain knowledge and technical know-how in manipulating audiological equipment and other supportive services.
This work will assist researchers and educators, in particular, in developing more viable aspects in the field of special education.
