BROADCAST CONTENTS AND LISTENERS’ CHOICE OF PROGRAMMES ON SELECT PRIVATE RADIO STATIONS

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the broadcast content and listeners’ preferences for programmes on various private radio stations in Uyo city. However, it employed Planet and Comfort Fm as case studies. To achieve this, five objectives and research questions were developed to drive the study.

The survey method was employed in the investigation. The study’s population consisted of listeners in Uyo city, which was expected to reach 436,606 by World Population Review.com in 2018. Taro Yamane’s formula generated a sample size of 400.

The questionnaire was employed as the study instrument, and respondents were recruited using the multistage sample approach and cluster sampling technique. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed, 381 of which served as the basis for simple percentage analysis.

The study’s key conclusions include that broadcast programs aired on both stations have a significant influence on listeners’ programming choices, both positively and negatively. The study found that Planet Fm is the most popular station among Uyo locals.

Football Planet was also the most popular programme on Planet Fm, while Comfort Fm’s Sport Marathon got the most listeners. These broadcasts were described as appealing because they meet the demands of the listeners.

Most respondents, however, chose these programs because of their content and sound quality. It was suggested that programs that positively influenced listeners be played, while those that had a detrimental impact be examined.

It also proposed that both stations enhance their delivery patterns, program lengths, program timing, language usage, and presenter fluency. They should also work on shows with low listenership in order to pique listeners’ curiosity.
