INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study.
Career selection is one of many critical decisions that students undertake when selecting their future goals. This decision will have long-term consequences for them because the essence of who they are is determined by what they wish to do with their life’s work.
According to Super, Savicks, and Super (1996), establishing early career decisions is a cultural developmental job that students should have completed by the conclusion of their high school year.
Career selection has evolved into a sophisticated science as a result of information technology, the post-industrial revolution, and job competitiveness. At the secondary school level, a student is required to know what he or she wants to accomplish in the future, which guides the choice of topics for the West African Certificate (WACE).
This decision-making is critical, and students must be permitted to choose their careers since it raises awareness in the students’ minds about the problems ahead (Joans, 1986). Any society’s future lies with the younger generation.
As a result, their professional choices should help students develop the information, skills, and attitude required to successfully assess their life, as well as explore and evaluate a wide range of employment opportunities in order to achieve future goals.
Ini Local Government Area was established on September 23, 1991. Ini people are well-known for their rich cultural history, which is strikingly comparable to that of other Ibibio groups around the state. They are primarily farmers who grow their products in commercial amounts.
Their specialisation in mat making has led them into commerce, which has taken them across Akwa Ibom and beyond, allowing them to contact with people from various countries.
In this modern and digital age, Ini people have adapted to other professions such as nursing, teaching, and engineering. This has resulted in a wide range of occupations and options for local government students.
Participation in activities at home, school, and in the community allows children to engage with one another, which broadens their perspectives and influences their career choices.
These elements aid them in selecting jobs in which they may excel, because a career decision selected by a student must be able to maintain him or her in the future throughout times of financial, emotional, family, political, and educational demands, among others.
Clearly, professional choices are intentional or required, and they must be made carefully to avoid regrets. Students forced into any vocation find it difficult to embrace and adapt to the problems that arise, leaving the student with the option of remaining static or withdrawing, as the case may be.
This also discourages the student and puts him or her in a position where he or she is unwilling to try anything new or unusual in the event that the student does not perform to the best of their abilities.
Indeed, profession choice is for development, and the choice of a vocation must meet the student(s)’ expectations of reaching greater heights as he or she strives for success. This study focusses on the factors that influence profession choices among secondary school students in the Ini Local Government Area.
