COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
ABSTRACT
This is the third edition of an introductory textbook on environmental risks geared largely towards undergraduate students. The most recent edition, draughted towards the end of the International Decade of Natural Disaster Reduction, emphasises how much work remained to be done.
Improvements in understanding trigger mechanisms, forecasting techniques, and mitigation strategies have been offset by a continued lack of risk perception, increased exposure due to the world’s growing population, and, particularly in the developing world, a combination of poverty, high hazard risk, and chronic vulnerability.
As a discipline, environmental hazards research is expanding beyond its initial concentration on site-specific, rapid-onset catastrophes to include large-scale, complex, and more insidious dangers.
This is reflected in the new edition, which includes extra material on disaster databases, sea-level rise and coastal flooding, global change, and sustainability in megacities, among others.
