Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
A court is a tribunal, frequently a governmental organisation, having the ability to hear legal disputes between parties and administer justice in civil, criminal, and administrative cases in conformity with the rule of law.
Courts are the primary mechanism of conflict resolution in both common and civil law legal systems, and it is often assumed that all people have the right to bring their claims before a court. Similarly, persons accused of a crime have the opportunity to provide a defence in court.
Nigeria has the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, High Court, Sharia Court of Appeal, and Customary Court of Appeal. In addition to the courts established by the Constitution, there are Magistrate Courts, District Courts, Area Courts, and Customary Courts established in several states by state laws.
These courts have limited authority, as stipulated in their enabling legislation, and appeals from them must be made to the High Court, Sharia Court of Appeal, or Customary Court of Appeal, as applicable.
The Federal High judicial in Calabar now documents judicial proceedings manually. This type of documentation has numerous flaws, including time-consuming searches for case files, inappropriate communication, and document filing.
In light of these shortcomings, this project creates and implements a computerised system to replace the manual procedure. The new technology will give the following benefits to the Federal High Court of Calabar.
It will improve the speed, precision, efficiency, and efficient attendance of each and every client in court, assisting Cross River State’s courts in achieving maximum utility.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Federal High judicial of Calabar documents judicial proceedings mechanically. The disadvantages of this strategy include time-consuming searches for case files.
Improper communication and submission of papers
Insects and rats destroy and damage the majority of court records, including criminal files, judgement cases, and other documents.
As a result, our project attempts to create a system that will minimise these flaws.
1.3 GOALS OF THE STUDY
The goal of this research is to build and create computer software that will:
Receive and save documents related to judicial proceedings.
Retrieve and update court records while protecting data integrity and confidentiality.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY.
The scope of this study will specifically focus on determining the actions of the Cross River State judiciary. It also investigates the judicial management system of Cross River State. The study is limited to the Federal High Court Calabar and focuses primarily on the usage of computers in their style of operation.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The purpose of this project is to develop a system that will reduce the obstacles associated with the current manual approach for storing and processing court proceedings.
Furthermore, it will improve the speed, precision, efficiency, and effectiveness with which each client attends court. It will also contribute to the improvement of the Cross River State judiciary in order to maximise its utility.
1.6 Limitations of the Study
Several variables have hindered this investigation, including:
TIME – The time allotted to research work for this study was severely limited due to the researcher’s busy academic activities.
FINANCE – Inadequate funding was the principal barrier for this investigation.
The current high cost of materials, access to a personal computer unit for running and debugging the application programme, transportation expenditures to and from the computer location, and so on all hampered the smooth and easy progress of the task.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Production Skills: The capacity to use computer-based systems to change the shape, time, and location of commodities and materials in order to transmit a message.
Data collection is the process of acquiring and measuring information on variables of interest in a systematic manner that allows one to answer specific research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes.
Computer data processing is any procedure that employs a computer programme to enter data, summarise it, and convert it into useful information.
A file is a collection of related data or records.
Data is any representation of facts that may be entered into a computer for processing.
