CORE TECHNOLOGY AND/OR EMERGING TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN THE LIBRARY ENVIRONMENT
CHAPTER ONE
THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Introduction
The pace of technological change is rapid. New library technologies are now available, and many more are on the horizon. It is not possible to afford to adopt all of the innovations and technologies. Of course, no library can afford to implement every new innovation that becomes available.
Libraries must have a vision in order to match new technologies to the needs of their users and institutions. Libraries must be willing to experiment with new technologies. Without a doubt, the implementation costs for any new technology will be significant for all library categories, particularly academic libraries.
Because academic libraries must have technologies that meet the needs of their users. Before implementing new technologies, a feasibility study is required, as well as a focused approach on how it will work in the future. Library needs do not implement any technology based solely on what it will do for library users today, but also on the hope that it will grow and change to meet the evolving needs of library users over the next few years.
As a result, technological decisions must be made with the future in mind. Technology’s rapid advancement cannot be stopped by anyone or in any way. Libraries have been early adopters of technology, allowing patrons to be collaborators rather than consumers of services (Goswami & Nisangka, 2014).
Emerging technology is defined as “technology on the verge of widespread adoption” (Cervone, 2010). The major technology trends in 2020 are hyper automation, human augmentation, distributed cloud, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) security, which are expected to be game changers in all fields, including libraries (Raiker, 2020).
When it comes to technology adoption, libraries in the Western world are at the forefront and even have an advantage. Many libraries lag behind what the West has experimented with and introduced. The integration of technology in libraries has become a necessity in order to work toward a common goal by uniting everyone around the world (Chloe, 2018).
