ABSTRACT
The problem of corporate corruption has been a major source of dispute in the Nigeria Police Force. This study looks at corrupt practices and activities among Nigerian police officers, as well as the overall effects of corporate corruption on how the organisation fulfils its mandatory responsibilities in society. Particular concern was expressed regarding the impact of corporate corruption on the maintenance of law and order by the police, the factors responsible for corporate corruption practices and activities among Nigerian police personnel, and the extent of corporate corruption within the Nigerian police or the survival of profit-making organisations. The research study focusses on Nigerian police, specifically the Imo State Command. As a qualitative survey (in-depth interview approach), the study population was limited to 212 respondents chosen through a sampling method. The responders in the survey included both civilians and police officers. The study demonstrated that the concept of police and what a stand is for is not unfamiliar to the people (especially the population of this study), as they could recall the services offered by the police in society on the spot. The majority of respondents have dealt with the police for a variety of reasons. Some respondents said that the nature of their occupation made it hard for them to avoid coming into touch with police (such as commercial motorists); others said it was because they were following some relatives and neighbours who had an issue that needed to be resolved at the police station. Nowadays, police officers negotiate and accept homeages from hoodlums on the street, even in public places. However, the majority of respondents do not consider the police (as an entity) or their personnel to be worthy of association due to their corrupt practices, activities, and crafty nature. The entire civil populace arm of this study views the police as extremely corrupt, but the prevalence of corporate corruption inside the force was confirmed among the police, but blanket generalisations of the entire system were denied. Among the reasons cited as contributing to the frequency of corporate corruption among Nigerian police officers, low police funding, which leads to irregular salary payments, rated highest. According to the survey results, corporate corruption has a wide-ranging impact on police efficiency. A often reported effect of corporate corruption on police performance is the ever-increasing crime rate, and an investigation into the police’s dedication to crime control in Nigeria yields a variety of responses. Some respondents believe the police are committed to their duty, while others do not. Some respondents believe that improved technology might increase the police’s level of service. However, the study found that people have acquired a tepid attitude towards reporting instances to the police when they are due, owing to a lack of trust in the police. On the basis of this, proposals were made on how to make the society habitable for the generality in view of the fact that police cannot work without the backing of the civil populace and vice-versa.
