Corruption And Victimization In Isidore Okpewotides And Anthony Abagha’S Children Of Oloibiri

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND FOR THE STUDY

Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines corruption as dishonest or criminal activity, particularly by those in positions of authority.

In philosophical, theological, and moral discourse, corruption refers to spiritual or moral impurity or divergence from an ideal. Corruption in the economy refers to the payment for services or materials to which the recipient is not legally entitled.

In government, it occurs when an elected representative makes decisions influenced by entrenched interests rather than legal or established government or party policies.

In real life, there is political, moral, and structural corruption or abuse of authority. Moral or political corruption is the abuse of public power, office, or resources by elected government officials for personal benefit, such as extortion, embezzlement, soliciting or offering bribes, or other forms of inducement.

Official corruption is a specific type of misbehaviour intended to achieve unfair benefits, personal profits, or career progress. Police officers, for example, will occasionally violate the police code of conduct in order to convict defendants using false evidence.

Systemic corruption is the entire subversion of a political or economic system, primarily owing to a flaw in an organisation or process. It contrasts with individuals, authorities, or agents who engage in corrupt behaviour within the system. Lack of transparency, low pay, injustice, greed, exploitation, and poverty are all factors that contribute to corruption.

Corruption is a significant development concern because it undermines democracy and good governance by circumventing or even manipulating legitimate processes. Corruption in elections and legislative processes undermines accountability and distorts representation in policymaking.

Corruption in the judiciary undermines the rule of law, while corruption in public administration leads to poor service delivery. It defies the country’s fundamental values regarding the importance of civic morality.

Corruption promotes environmental harm. Industrial corruption happens when a supplier bribes an industry or a manufacturer in order to offer low-quality items at the same price as high-quality products.

Corruption is a negative force that undermines governance and oppresses individuals in many places across the world. It is typically used to describe the existence of widespread social issues that touch all sectors of our society.

Victimisation is the act of being victimised, being a victim, or receiving undeserved punishment. Victimisation is defined as subjecting someone or a group of people to unfair treatment because you dislike them, their ideas, or something they have done. The trauma of victimisation is a direct result of the aftermath of arbitrary punishment.

Victims experience a great deal of physical and psychological stress. The victim’s bodily injuries may include cuts, bruises, or broken arms and legs. Victims frequently report weariness, difficulty sleeping, or an increase or decrease in appetite. Many victims believe that the stress generated by victimisation puts them at risk of developing medical or psychological difficulties later in life.

In contemporary society, people are victimised for a variety of reasons. Women have historically and continue to be victimised after their husbands die and when they are unable to bear children.

Women are frequently socially and psychologically victimised in the absence of their spouses and children. Men who are impotent or childless are victimised since they are not allowed to freely express their opinions in social gatherings.

Victimisation occurs when a person is denied his rights and property and maltreated for no good cause. Such a person frequently avoids society, particularly the company of his victims or those who disagree with his way of life.
