Counsellors’ Perception On The Causes Of Divorce And Its Impact On Adolescents In Educational Zone

ABSTRACT

Divorce is the legal end of a legitimate marriage. Divorce is a common occurrence in Nigeria, with more than one-third of all children suffering negative consequences (Owusu-Bempah, 2007). For many children, the effects of divorce can have immediate and long-term consequences for their scholastic attainment.

Divorce is only one of the numerous issues that families face today. People have differing opinions on the impact of divorce on children, but many analysts believe that when a couple decides to divorce, the consequences for them and their children are usually unfavourable.

The term ‘divorce’ comes from the Latin word “divortere,” which means to turn different directions or separate. This suggests that divorce is the final end of a marital union

cancelling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the matrimonial relationships between the parties. This could occur if a husband and wife decide not to live together and are no longer interested in their marriage.’
