CREDIT MANAGEMENT IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY A CASE STUDY OF UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA (UBA) KADUNA NORTH, KADUNA
Abstract
This project examined the structure of credit management in the banking industry with special reference to the United Bank for Africa – UBA located on the Hospital Road, Kaduna – often called Kaduna North Branch. The purposes of the study are to investigate various credit facilities offered by the bank to customers; to assess the efficiency of its credit management policies and to determine the extent of the effects of the policies on the organisational productivity. The primary and secondary sources of data collection were used. The primary data was obtained through the instument of questionnaire administered on the bank, to obtain data analysed in chapter IV while the many related literature were consulted to write up chapter II which formed the theoretical framework of the study. The data analysis method used was a question-response approach which allows for the stating of the question and indicating the response immediately after. This method was adopted because the data collected were all provided jointly by the credit department in one questionnaire. So there was no need for the use of percentages and tables as often required in a traditional survey study. The summary of the findings indicate that the bank has the following kinds of credit facilities in her credit portfolio which include loans, bonds, indemnity guarantees, direct credit, documents, bankers acceptances, stock replacement credits, documentary credit and overdraft. The Bank also operates under stipulated credit regulatory policies which relate seriously to credit worthiness, debt recovery, check system with an inducement facility, collaterals and litigation as a last resort. The findings, based on tne analysis were tested by a 3-point hypothesis which were all rejected. The study revealed that the credit policies of the bank are effective; that it is not always the faults of the borrower to repay the debt; and that the delays in repayment of debt affect the lending organisation (ie the bank adversely). Based on the findings, the researcher made a 10-point recommendation for the banking industry and other users of the data. The llth-point recommendation is for a further research, which calls for the examination of organisational Policies on Liabilities.
