DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A POLICE CRIME DIARY

INTRODUCTION

A system, which has many definitions, can be thought of as a collection of a computer’s hardware and software.

According to Stella C. Chiemeke and Franca A. Egbokdara (2006), a system is a collection of components that work together to achieve a common goal. In another meaning, a system is a collection of interconnected or crossing pieces that form a cohesive whole.

In the present era, computers have proven their existence. The introduction of computers in our culture sparked much concern about the dangers they bring to society.

Critics of computers and new approaches express concerns about how computers will displace and replace all human abilities, resulting in mass unemployment.

The prevalence of computers in almost every aspect of today’s fast-paced life has proven the critic wrong, since the invention of computers and new technologies continues to produce more jobs for individuals who identify with computers and new technologies. This makes computers partners with humans in all areas of human endeavour.

Uzoka states in Hampo, J.A. (2011) that decisions are primarily based on beliefs and experience. In recent years, efforts have been made to incorporate intelligence into computer systems, allowing the computer to process enormous amounts of structured and unstructured data for decision making.

Background of the Study

Technology and computer systems have enabled us to monitor and report (analyse) every aspect of our lives and environments. Technology has greatly aided in the fight against crime through diversionary methods.

This is only true when technology and computer systems are employed in a beneficial manner in society. Furthermore, the presence of advanced computing technology and a well-trained intellect in today’s modern environment has mechanised nearly every element of life.

According to the website Wikipedia, “A discrete entries arranged by date, reporting on what has happen,(not what will happen) over the course of a day or a given period, is a diary” The diary was originally handwritten and formal.

Diaries come in a variety of types, including personal diaries, crime diaries, economic diaries, and ecclesiastical diaries. According to Wikipedia, a diarist is someone who has the authority and responsibility of maintaining a diary, or simply ”

a diarist is someone who keeps a diary”. Diaries have played an important role in human society since they serve as a tool of recording and documentation.

Marrian-webster on Wikipedia, “The word diary is derived from the Latin word diarium, which means ‘daily allowance’.” The following are instances of diaries.

Personal diaries record a person’s experiences, ideas, and feelings. Most comments on events that occur outside of the person’s immediate experience are inductive in nature.

A war diary is a regularly updated official record of the administration and activities of a military unit during warfare.
Economic diary: a periodic record of economic activity.

Crime diary: a regular report on crime in a certain geographical area or organisation.

The automation of many forms and types of diaries has completely altered the meaning of the term “diary” because they serve more functions than simply capturing or storing data.

The constant availability of Internet services, technical and electronic gadgets has prompted many people to digitalize their diaries as a means of chronicling events and lives.”

The word “escribitionist” is commonly used to describe someone who writes an electronic diary or journal and, in particular, publishes their entries on the internet. (Source: http://on.wikipedia.org/wiki/online-diary; retrieved on November 11, 2012)

The Nigeria Police Force Section 194 of the 1979 constitution designates the NPF as Nigeria’s national police force, with executive authority over the entire country.

However, there is a constitutional provision for the establishment of a separate NPF that is under the general operational and administrative control of an inspector general of police (IGP) appointed by the current president and responsible for the maintenance of law and order, as well as police law implementing agents.

Thus, policing is the maintenance and implementation of legislated and constitutional legislation. They are also security personnel. In Nigeria, there are three types of police: NPF, air police, and military police.
