DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A POLICE CRIME DIARY

ABSTRACT OF A POLICE CRIME DIARY DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION
When used correctly, the complexity and anonymity of computer systems not only assists crime in society, but also acts as a deterrent to crime, aiding in crime prevention and investigation.

Crime is becoming an obvious fact, an important component of the dangers we face in everyday life. Crime is synonymous with hurt and violence. A crime diary is a periodic record or report of crime that can be automated or human.

An automated crime journal is similar to an online diary and a blog. Design and implementation of a police crime journal is a web-based system created with visual studio 2008 (ASP.NET) as the front end and MS SQL Management studio 2005 as the back end (data drum).

With extra and helpful features, this system fully automates the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) police crime diary.

INTRODUCTION TO CHAPTER ONE OF THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A POLICE CRIME DIARY

A system, which has many definitions, can be thought of as a collection of a computer’s hardware and software components.

Stella C. Chiemeke and Franca A. Egbokdara (2006) define a system as a collection of components that work together to achieve a common goal. In another meaning, a system is a collection of interconnected or intersecting pieces that form a coherent whole.

In this day and age, computers have validated the reason for their existence. The introduction of computers into our culture sparked much debate about the dangers they bring to society.

Computer and new technique critics express concern about how computers would displace and replace all human talents, resulting in mass unemployment.

The prevalence of computers in almost every field of today’s fast-paced life has proven the critics incorrect, as the invention of computers and new technologies continues to create new jobs for individuals who identify with computers and new technologies. This makes computers a partner to humans in all areas of human endeavour.

“Decisions are largely based on principles and experience,” writes Uzoka in Hampo, J.A. (2011). In recent years, efforts have been made to incorporate intelligence into computer systems, so that the computer can be utilised to process enormous amounts of structured and unstructured data for decision making.”

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
We can now track and report (analyse) every detail of our lives and environments because to advances in technology and computer systems. Technology has greatly aided in the war of crime through diversionary methods on countless occasions.

This is only true when technology and computer systems are employed constructively in our society. Furthermore, the presence of advanced computing technology and a well-trained intellect in today’s modern environment has mechanised practically every area of life.

“A diary is a discrete entry arranged by date, reporting on what has happened (not what will happen) over the course of a day or a given period,” according to Wikipedia.

The diary was originally handwritten and formal. Diaries come in a variety of forms, including personal diaries, crime diaries, economic diaries, and ecclesiastical diaries.

According to Wikipedia, a diarist is someone who has the authority and responsibility of maintaining a diary, or simply put, “a diarist is someone who keeps a diary.” As a form of record-keeping and documenting, diaries played an important role in human civilisation.

Wikipedia’s Marrian-webster, “The word diary comes from the Latin word diarium, which means ‘daily allowance,'” explains. Here are some diary samples.

Personal diaries contain a person’s experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Most of the time, comments on occurrences outside of the person’s immediate experience are inductive. A war diary is an official record of a military unit’s administration and actions during warfare.

Economic diary: a record of economic actions on a regular basis.

A crime diary is a regular report on crime in a certain geographical area or organisation.

The automation of various forms / types of diaries has completely changed the definition of the term “diary” as they now serve more functions than only capturing or storing data.

Because of the constant availability of Internet Services, technology and electronic gadgets, many individuals have adopted digitalizing diary as a medium to chronicle events and life.

“ESCRIBITIONST is the common term for someone who keeps a diary or journal electronically and, in particular, publishes their entries on the internet.” (Source: http:// www.wikipedia.org/wiki/online – diary; retrieved on November 11th, 2012)

Nigeria’s police force Section 194 of the 1979 constitution designates the Nigeria Police Force as the national police of Nigeria, having executive jurisdiction across the country.

However, there is a constitutional provision in place that allows for the establishment of a separate NPF that is under the general operational and administrative control of an inspector general of police (IGP) appointed by the current and responsible for the maintenance of law and order police law maintaining implementing agents.

Thus, the purpose of policing is to uphold and enforce legislated and constitutional legislation. They are also security guards. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, there are three types of police: NPF, air police, and military police.

When informal relationships and consequences fail to develop and sustain a planned order, a government or state may impose a more formalised or stronger social control structure. With institutional and legal machinery at their disposal, state agents may compel the public to follow the code and can choose to penalise those who do not.

Crime is defined as the violation of rules or laws for which some governing power can eventually prescribe a conviction.

According to Wikipedia, the word crime is derived from the Latin root ‘cerno’, which means “I decide, I give judgement”: crime can be political, religious, or economic in nature, among other things.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To create a system in the form of a website that automates the Nigeria Police Force’s manual crime diary. The system’s front-end design is done in ASP.net of Visual Studio 2008, while the data drum is done in Microsoft SQL server management studios 2005.

This suggested website is an online journal that will: Help in the privacy of crime suspects, since they will not be permeated, and only authorised officers and the reporter will be aware of the superseded criminal.

Reduce paper effort and encourage record keeping through digital means.
To define diary, crimes, and online diary.

Other manual police crime diaries were used to demonstrate the novel feature of this automated police crime diary.

1.3 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Crime is defined as a violation of enacted law in the graphical region. As a result, this police crime record is subject to Nigerian laws, including the Police Act.

1.4 MOTIVATION

Both suspected criminals and reporters are concerned about character deformation caused by a lack of privacy. Furthermore, the NPF’s decision to discontinue parading suspects until they are proved guilty is a boon to fundamental rights.

As a result, the motivations for this research include security, privacy, and the enforcement of Nigeria’s fundamental human rights.

1.5 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Suspects are treated like criminals, and even if they are found innocent, the previous treatment and publicity surrounding the alleged crime has tarnished their reputation,

which cannot be readily or never washed away. With advancements in technology and the presence of the internet in every nook and cranny, the aforementioned problem of manual police crime dray has multiplied.

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The investigation is limited by the availability of time to access and make use of viable resources / materials. Another thing to consider is the literature review and the scope of the investigation. Material and resources were made more efficient.

1.7 METHODOLOGY

Approaches such as RAD (Rapid Application Development) and SSADM (Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology) were used.

In the meantime, relevant literature and authorities were consulted and reviewed. Papers on crime, digital diaries, and online diaries, among other topics, were scrutinised.

The Graphic User Interface (GUI) was created utilising Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and the programming language ASP.NET. Its database was SQL Server management studio 2005.
