DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SOCIAL MEDIA BASED WEB APPLICATION FOR PROSPECTIVE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Introduction:

1.1 Background of the Study

Humans have always developed ways to address their basic desire for communication. The media, which encompasses numerous forms of communication, has become a crucial aspect of daily life globally. Early personal media, such as speech and gestures, were user-friendly and did not require advanced technology (Idakwo, 2011).

Over time, the internet community has grown significantly thanks to social media. Social media plays a crucial role in modern society. This is a defining feature of our increasingly interwoven social relationships. Guha (2013) found that social media has a significant impact in five contexts: news, interactions, political landscapes, learning, and marketing.

With over 80% of teens using social media, it’s no surprise that their social lives are changing. According to Chopra (2013), social media has a positive impact on communication, allowing us to broaden our social networks and discover new perspectives.

Throughout history, ideas and new technology have evolved to meet the demands of individuals seeking to adapt to new social norms. During times of significant change, society seeks purpose and meaning. According to Idakwo (2011), information is the primary instrument for understanding one’s surroundings.

Online forums have gained popularity due to comparable debates, posts, and threads (Xiaolin et al., 2009; Sumit & Prasenjit, 2010).
Online forums have emerged as effective instruments for information sharing (Bedmar, 2010). According to Falls (2012), online discussion forums are becoming popular for asking and answering questions.

Online forums differ from other social networking platforms with unique features such as threads for discussions and posts, RSS feeds, and polls.

Online forums offer a unique social environment where individuals can freely communicate and access information.
Users can create new subjects or add comments in existing ones (Xiaolin et al., 2009).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Prospective university students often struggle with job choices, course of study, and school selection (Ogu, 2008; Orndorff & Herr, 1996). To address these issues, it’s necessary to build a platform where students may connect with peers who can provide answers.
To address the issues mentioned above, web application developers must evaluate appropriate needs.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Our goal is to create an online platform for students to discuss their thoughts and comments on numerous topics, as well as provide information about any institution. This will be accomplished through the following objectives:

1. Identifying the appropriate requirements for this application.

2. Using the Unified Modelling Language (UML) to model the obtained requirements.

3. Create a user-friendly environment for students to engage and ask questions through threads and themes.

3

1.4 Research Methodology

Research will be undertaken using several data sources, including online surveys, journals, books, and literature reviews. A examination of existing systems will determine the necessary requirements for developing this application.

A platform for users to respond to queries and contribute information will be established using ‘question and answer’ techniques to effectively address the aforementioned difficulties.

The online forum will employ UML diagrams to demonstrate various functions, such as use cases and class diagrams. The web application will be implemented using design diagrams, PHP programming, and MySQL database administration, modelled after existing forum software.

The system will be assessed based on user input and reports.

The above-mentioned objectives will be met using the following means:

Table I. Research Objectives and Methodology

S/N objectives and proposed methodology.

1. Gathering the necessary requirements for the application.  Eliciting requirements.

 Review existing systems.

2. Using UML to model gathered requirements.

Review of Existing Models

 Utilising UML diagrams, including class and activity diagrams

3. Develop a user-friendly environment for students to engage and ask questions through threads and themes.

 Front-end code, including the interface, will be written in PHP.

The messages and threads will be kept in a MySQL relational database.

 Review of forum software, including phpBB and vBulletin.
