DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR MALARIA DIAGNOSIS
INTRODUCTION
Malaria is a human disease caused by infection with a protozoan parasite from the genus Plasmodium and is characterised by chills, fever (continuous elevation of body temperature), and, in the most severe instances, coma, which leads to death.
Malaria infection can be uncomplicated or severe. When plasmodium falciparum causes the infection, it is considered severe. The parasite’s life cycle (pathogenesis) is difficult because the merozite (parasitic daughter cell) produces distinct antigens that are susceptible to different antibodies. This has made the manufacture of the vaccine against it challenging, while also allowing it to hide from the immune system.
Human malaria is caused by four types of Plasmodium. These are plasmodium vivax, which causes vivax malaria, plasmodium falciparum malaria, plasmodium malariae, which produces malaria, and plasmodium ovale, which causes malaria.
The disease is now found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, with Africa having the highest prevalence of infection. The optimistic vision of malaria eradication half a country ago has been amended
and the emphasis is now on control, as speed, precision, and efficient information distribution are necessary in accurate illness detection and treatment, necessitating the use of web-based health care information.
1.1 Background of Study
Health care information is a system instilled by health ministries, hospitals and clinics, dispensaries, and other health industries in which people are educated in various health matters while waiting in hospital waiting rooms to see doctors or medical practitioners, stating most health problems, their causes, prevention and control measures, first aid, and potential cures with the goal of improving people’s health conditions or situations.
In this health care information system, patients can learn more about malaria, what they can do to avoid being victims, and what should be done if they become victims to assist them get rid of the disease.
As a result, the web-based system that will be created as part of this project will assist all medical practitioners and patients in establishing good health development, diagnosis, and treatment of malaria in the masses.
Furthermore, if the programme is made widely available, the rate at which individuals become ill, die, or are disabled as a result of malaria will undoubtedly decrease. Because people can access the website from home and watch on their personal PCs.
1.2 Statement of Problem
There are a limited number of medical doctors available to treat malaria, and they are not uniformly distributed throughout the country. Furthermore, the people who should have access to healthcare facilities live a long distance away.
Given the aforementioned, it is critical to develop and implement an expert system to assist doctors in diagnosing and treating malaria, which is the focus of this research.
There is a need to develop a web-based expert system that would diagnose malaria patients, recommend treatments, and deliver malaria-related information to hospitals and individuals.
The programme will detect malaria infection based on the patient’s symptoms and test results, propose a medication, provide a database for recording drug prescription and other malaria-related information, and be easy to use.
iii. There is a need to develop a system that will preserve an expert medical doctor’s knowledge of malaria therapy in the event of an emergency.
The method will serve as a diagnostic tool, assisting malaria researchers in determining the intensity or concentration of malaria parasites in specific geographical places, allowing them to build effective control strategies to prevent malaria transmission in such areas.
There is a need to develop a system that can also solve difficulties in locations where there are no or a limited number of medical specialists.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The goal of this study is to create and implement a web-based health care information system that will help doctors in their never-ending battle to eradicate diseases like malaria.
To establish a method that will aid in the detection of malaria.
It provides precise and efficient information about malaria treatment options.
It explains how to avoid and control malaria.
Its almost-objective is to be unreliable and capable of acting as a doctor in the absence of such professionals.
1.4 Significance of Study
Malaria is a disease that, despite its prevalence, many people are still unaware of and, as a result, do not treat it seriously. As a result, the significance of this study cannot be overstated, as it contains the key to accurate disease diagnosis and therapy. It will also be useful in areas where there is no experience in malaria treatment.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This project focuses solely on the dissemination of a health care information system for malaria diagnosis and treatment, which will be available online or on Wednesdays.
1.6 Limitations of Study
The financial aspect, the cost of obtaining materials for this work, and a lack of sufficient information and cooperation from doctors, nurses, and medical research institutions all contributed to our inability to collect enough relevant data.
1.7 Definition of Terms
ALIMENT
A slight disease or damage, particularly one that persists.
CHILL
A sudden brief fever is characterised by shivering and a sense of chill.
CONSULTANT
A senior doctor who is completely trained in a certain field of medicine.
Health Care
Medical and allied services are provided with the goal of maintaining good health, particularly disease prevention and treatment.
