DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN EXPERT SYSTEM ON DIAGNOSIS OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

INTRODUCTION The computer has become an integral part of modern society, capable of handling repetitive and time-consuming tasks. This has inspired computer scientists to create expert systems in specific fields or disciplines to solve problems or provide knowledge-based solutions.

Expert systems seek to provide both human knowledge and reasoning capabilities. They are experts in only one field, topic, or discipline; they can assist in the solution of a narrowly defined problem via a keyboard, scanner, etc., and the computer responds with an answer and explanation based on the facts and rules extracted from humans and experts and stored in the computer.

Disease is an ailment that deviates from health due to a specific destructive process in one of the body’s organs, with a defined cause and symbols; medicine is the knowledge and practice concerned with the cure and prevention of disease, as well as the prevention of health disorders.

This goal can be accomplished by diagnostics and treatments. Normally, people visit a hospital/medical centre with the knowledge to diagnose them based on the information given.

Some medicines, pills, and injections. The doctor/physician will recommend capsules and other treatments based on the nature of the suspected or identified disorders. The patient will next take the medications as prescribed by the doctor.

Computers, on the other hand, are well-known for their broad definition and are among the most significant technologies of the 20th century. The Oxford Dictionary of Current English describes a computer as an electronic device that saves data, analyses it, and generates information based on the data input.

Furthermore, a computer can be thought of as an electronic device capable of receiving incoming data into its memory, processing it quickly, and producing correct results.

In a nutshell, communicable diseases are defined as clinically obvious illness, or typical medical signs and/or symptoms of disease, caused by the infection, presence, and proliferation of pathogenic biological agents in a single organism.

Background of the study

An expert system is a software system that aims to replicate the performance of one or more human experts, typically in a specific issue area.

It is a conventional application and/or subfield of AI. A broad number of ways can be employed to imitate the performance of the expert, but common to most or all of them

1) The establishment of a so-called “knowledge base” which uses some knowledge representation formalism to capture the knowledge of the subject matter experts (SME).

2) information engineering is the process of acquiring information from SMEs and codifying it in accordance with the formalism. Expert systems may or may not include learning components, but a third common feature is that once constructed

the system is tested by placing it in the same real-world problem-solving environment as the human SME, either as an assistance to human workers or as a supplement to some information system.

As a leading application of computing and artificial intelligence, expert systems shares many similarities with general systems theory, operations research, business process reengineering, and a variety of areas in applied mathematics and management science.
