DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN NYSC INFORMATION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a project that engages Nigerian graduates in the development and integration of their country. The initiative consists of a one-year curriculum in which graduates are randomly assigned throughout the country to serve their fatherland with devotion and patriotism.

Every year, around 5,000 corps members are dispatched to each state for one year of duty. This deployment is divided into three (3) batches: batches A, B, and C. Batch A and B corps members are often larger in number, while batch C corps members are smaller.

Some of these individuals will relocate from the state in which they are deployed to another state for a variety of reasons, including marital status and health.

Corps members should be assigned to cities and states remote from their hometowns and states of origin. They are supposed to socialise with people from diverse tribes, social and family backgrounds in order to learn about the indigene culture of the area where they are assigned.

It is a way to promote unity in Nigeria and to assist young people respect various ethnic groups in the country. During the one-year service tenure, there is a three-week “Orientation” period in a camp away from family and friends.

During the three weeks of orientation camp, corps members receive trainings (physical and emotional education) to prepare them for the tasks ahead. They authenticate their registration prior to the camp, and they must produce certain documents before being properly registered for the camp.

This internal registration is done manually and is often difficult for corps members.Only corps members who register before the deadline (typically 12 midnight on the third or fourth day, depending on the length of the orientation) are eligible to participate in the orientation exercise.

During this time, individuals typically confront the challenge of obtaining the right information at the right time, as well as discovering the camp region and having the relevant paperwork on hand.

The National Youth Service Corps Scheme, which has garnered widespread acceptance countrywide, requires a conducive climate and a suitable environment for the appropriate orientation of Nigerian youngsters. The programme also helps to create job opportunities for many Nigerian youths.

An NYSC forum dedicated to NYSC members was recently established to bridge the gap between members serving across Nigeria and to provide an opportunity for corps to discuss job information and career tools, as well as to obtain loans from the National Directorate of Employment.

The NYSC programme prepares young people to work after completing their tertiary education at universities, polytechnics, or equivalent institutions.

This programme is experiencing numerous obstacles, including the posting of a graduate of a science programme to an acceptable area of primary assignment, as well as an efficient communication platform with management bodies and corps members.

Due to a lack of information, some corps members fail to perform their duties efficiently. This research is intended to contribute to the development of solutions to these difficulties.

Okeke (1999) observed in his theoretical research that the initiative with such admirable aims and objectives had been laden with so many challenges, including the necessity for well-designed and equipped orientation camps for the orientation and redirection of our kids to aid

fulfil the demands of a constantly evolving society. This paper suggests a solution to this problem. Embracing information and communication technology will also help to address these concerns.Every arm of the NYSC wing should utilise ICT platforms in order to improve system management effectiveness.
