DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE JOURNAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Chapter one
Introduction: 1.1 Background of the Study.
As demand for online systems grows in our social, business, and educational sectors. There is also a demand for online solutions in the Research and Publication domain to make their activities more efficient and automated. Researchers primarily use journals to disseminate their research so that others all around the world can use it for a variety of purposes.
Online journal management systems are intended to reduce stress experienced by contributors, journal managers, and other researchers by transforming manual operations to online processes. Records and information of all activity performed on the system can be traced easily and effectively.
This project research named “Design and Implementation of an Online Journal System” would aid in the automation of some of the operations involved in the journal publication process. This will include:
i. Article Submission will be automated, allowing contributors from anywhere in the globe to submit articles that will be received quickly by the system.
ii. Access to all submitted articles for publication by the Journal Manager.
iii. Contributors and researchers can access published journal articles from anywhere in the world.
This system will be web-based and built for the Sokoto International Journal of Counselling Psychology, which is published by the Department of Educational Foundations at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. The system will also provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Some of the issues found with the present manual system for journal administration are:
i. International authors or those who live outside of Sokoto have difficulty submitting articles for publication; they must send them via courier.
ii. The loss of manuscripts before or after the examination is another important issue with the existing manual procedure.
iii. Other researchers who are not contributors have difficulty using the journal because only contributors receive single copies of the journal following publication.
iv. Additionally, because the current manual method is based on fliers, many academics may be unaware of calls for article submissions for publication.
1.3. Aim and Objectives
The goal of this project is to create an online journal management system that will replace the existing manual system. The study’s aims are as follows.
i. Design a method that will allow contributors and researchers to submit publications online rather than manually.
ii. Allow contributors to track their entries, which means that each contributor can view all of his submissions.
iii. To allow the administrator to view and download all submissions submitted by contributors for review prior to publishing.
iv. Allow the administrator to post all published articles online based on volume and issue.
v. Allow all contributors and scholars to read and download published publications online.
vi. Provide a method for requesting either a hard copy or an electronic copy of a complete volume of the published Journal.
vii. To allow editors/assessors to complete an online assessment form, which will be forwarded to the contributor informing him of the outcome and status of his article.
viii. Evaluate the developed system.
1.4 Motivation for the Study
Some of the issues encountered by the current manual system include manuscript loss or misplacement prior to or following examination. Furthermore, the likelihood that other scholars from different regions will use the articles published in that publication is extremely low.
These issues prompted me to create a system that would address the issues encountered by the current manual system. This research will also allow me to use my understanding of web development, databases, software engineering, and other aspects of computers to tackle the problem.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The goal of this project is to create a web-based (works on the web or internet) journal management system that will keep researchers up to date on the journal’s current news or events, such as calls for papers/articles, submission guidelines, editorial board, and other relevant information.
It will also save information about all submissions and publications to the journal. The Journal manager can access and download all submissions from contributors and notify them of the status of their articles, whether accepted or rejected. Also, published works can be used by researchers from all over the world.
1.6 Limitations of the Study
The project’s study is limited to The Sokoto International Journal of Counselling Psychology (SIJCP), an official journal of the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, and Extension Services. Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto.
1.7 Definition of Terms
1. The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that employ the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to service billions of users across the world. It’s sometimes called the network of networks.
2. Web-based: A web-based application is one that is accessible over the World Wide Web.
3. WWW (World Wide Web): The World Wide Web is a system of interrelated hypertext content accessible through the Internet.
4. Online System: These are systems and applications that may be accessible via the internet. Users can access it from any location in the world.
5. Journal: A journal is a regularly published scholarly periodical. It features papers produced by professionals in a certain field of study, which are based on research or analysis conducted by the author or writers.
6. Management: The process of interacting with or controlling objects or people. It also refers to the process of operating and regulating something.
7. Software: These are sets of instructions that are intended to tackle a particular problem. Software is comprised of data and instructions. There are two sorts of software: system software and applications.
