INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction
Developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) have had an impact on all areas of society, including education. In higher education, the use of ICTs in the form of e-learning is transforming the way students learn and teachers teach [1].

School management is now done online, with records stored in web-accessible databases. Registration, school fee payment, timetable generation, and much more are all done online.

The world of information technology has advanced to the point where we recognise the value of adopting automated systems over manual systems.

Referring to the issue of school fees and hostel allocation as the Automatic Payment Portal System (APPS) dilemma. Given the enormous number of students normally involved in such an issue, there is a rising demand in automating the payment process through centralised matching schemes that use efficient APPS algorithms. Several universities have implemented comparable automated systems.

In recent years, technological advancements have ushered in a new era of Web-based services. These systems, also known as enquiry systems, provide the ability to input data with a guaranteed response time and assurance that the information is correct and timely, and are referred to as a “Real Time System”[6]. A real-time system, like a Web-based system, consists mostly on four (4) major components:

A data collection component that collects information from the surrounding environment.

An analysis component that alters received data as needed by the application.

A control component that reacts to the surrounding environment.

A monitoring component that coordinates all other forms of these components, allowing for real-time responses.

Because of these improvements, organisations no longer need to be centralised, as information services may reach homes and offices for processing from a variety of geographical areas.

However, web-based solutions have made a significant contribution to every aspect of modern human life. As a result, this project work delivers and develops an Automatic Payment Portal System (APPS) for Ahmadu Bello University’s Zaria, Congo Campus through the establishment of a Web-based system, hence improving the university’s efficiency and effectiveness.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Students’ enrolment in most Nigerian institutions of higher learning, particularly universities and polytechnics, is steadily increasing, and each year, every student is expected to register for a session, for which they must pay.

The rise in student population over the years has made registration unpleasant and the payment of school fees and hostel lodging a time-consuming operation.

The current mechanism for paying school tuition and allocating hostels at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kongo Campus requires a student to login online and generate a transaction ID, which is then taken to the bank for payment.

If the student need a hostel allocation, he or she must return online, reserve a room, generate a new transaction ID, and return it to the bank. This process is producing a lot of problems because many students will have to wait in long lines in banks, where numerous unforeseen incidents can occur.

A student may lose money, become weary due to stress, or experience a variety of other occurrences. Most pupils are at home during registration and will need to return to school because most banks outside of Zaria do not offer this service.

1.3 Motivation.

The current method or manner of payment causes stress due to the factors and conditions faced during registration. All new and returning students must register at the start of each session.

Most students are perplexed during registration, either because they do not already have the funds to pay their school fees or because they will have to come down to school to pay during the process with no promise of accommodation or give the money to a friend who is enrolled.

Based on these insights, a web-based payment mechanism is built and implemented to assist students in overcoming these issues during registration. The method will allow a student to open an account at a designated bank and deposit his or her school fees at any time.

Due to the current state of the country, parents can also keep their children’s complete school payments in their accounts. As a result, the system allows you to pay your school fees either in installments or all at once. The construction of this Web-based system will resolve the key issues with the current system.

1.4 AIM
The project’s goal is to create an Automatic Portal Payment System (APPS) that will allow students to securely and easily pay their school and accommodation costs during registration.

 

1.5 Objectives.
Create a web-based solution that will tackle the difficulties of the existing system utilised for school fees, lodging payment, and hostel allocation.

Create a system that allows students to save their school payments in an account prior to enrollment.

Allow students to pay for their school fees and hostel accommodations at any moment during registration.

Ease and speed up student registration for each session.

Test and validate the system prototype.

1.6 SCOPE.

The goal of this project is to create an Automatic Payment Portal System (APPS) for the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kongo Campus. The system will only accommodate the administrator, bank staff, and students in a single integrated database system.

This initiative is likewise limited to undergraduate programmes at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kongo Campus, and is intended for two faculties there: the Faculty of Administration and the Faculty of Law.

1.7 Research Methodology

The proposed research approach to be adopted is as follows:

Requirement Assessment -: A complete assessment of the current system will be conducted, and the requirements of the new system will be clearly outlined through interviews with students and instructors.

Application Programme -: At this point, the design work flow will be turned to code and tested.

Testing and Development -: The final application will be tested and delivered to a remote web host, ready for use.

1.8 SIGNIFICANCE.

According to the literature, the seemingly simple act of collecting payments from clients is actually rather difficult for practically every business. However, organisations want to make it quick and comfortable for customers to pay, so they offer a variety of payment forms and channels.

As a result, this proposal recommended the creation of an alternate platform that allows students and their sponsors to safely pay university tuition online from anywhere during registration.

This will alleviate the long lines and congestion at banks for payments. Sponsors of students will also be able to save their wards’ school expenses before the registration time, making it easier to provide for their wards [2].

1.9 Organisation of the Project

The project is broken into five chapters. Chapter One is an introductory chapter that includes the motivation, scope, research methodology, aims, and objectives of the work

Chapter Two is a literature review;

Chapter Three discusses the work’s system analysis and design; Chapter Four is the system development, implementation, and testing; and finally, Chapter Five contains the recommendation and conclusions.
