DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE ADMISSION SCREENING SYSTEM

Chapter One: Designing and Implementing an Online Admission Screening System.

INTRODUCTION

1.0. Background of the Study

Student admissions play a critical role in the major activities of every institution because students are the university’s core requirement, and institutions cannot exist without them.

An inefficient admission application procedure may lower the number of admitted students at the prestigious university due to human intervention, and humans are naturally prone to error.

The goal of this project is to create an automated admission system that would bring about this paradigm change while also providing a solution to the issues inherent in the current approach adopted by Lagos State Polytechnic.

The suggested system, Automated Admission Processing System, will be built with HTML, CSS, and PHP as the front end and MY SQL database management system as the back end.Desile, M. (2009)

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Despite the fact that students complete their application forms online, the current process for student admission at Lagos State Polytechnic is still manual. The current system has the following drawbacks.

Human intervention causes delays in functioning.

Heavy web material causes delayed information retrieval.

Due to insufficient data validation, there is a high risk of error.

An unfriendly or difficult-to-use interface.

High operating costs.

Because there is no decision-making capability in the current information system, the application still appears to be a manual procedure.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY.

This project aims to provide an automated online admission processing system that will help boost the speed of processing student admissions while also reducing or eliminating work by automating the admission process to make it more convenient.

Aims of the Study

The goal of this research is to critically evaluate the collection and processing of student admission forms in order to identify system flaws and build a new method to help decrease or eliminate the identified difficulties.

GOALS OF THE STUDY

The aims of this research work are as follows:

Study the present system to have a thorough understanding of it.

Identify flaws with the existing system.

Resolve issues with the application process and record keeping.

Enhance the institution’s document management system.

Make the system easy to use, even for students with little computer knowledge.

Provide easy retrieval of student data.

Make the online material lighter to improve retrieval performance, even on slow internet.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:
The focus of this research is on developing automated web-based application software for student admission procedures. The system of Lagos State Polytechnic is only focused on student application processing, record keeping, and information retrieval.

It will also be able to shortlist eligible applicants and make them available for final administrator approval before offering them provisional admission.

1.6. Significance of the Study

The automated admission processing system will help to decrease some of the arduous work involved in student admission processing, maximise institutional returns, and provide users with a user-friendly interface.

Definition of Basic Concept

Automation: The use of technology to substitute human workers; A system in which a workplace or process has been changed to use electronic or mechanical equipment instead of human labour.

Admission is the process of accepting students to study at an institution.

Processing: To deal with someone or something in accordance with a predetermined method.

System: A collection of computer components that work together, including hardware, software, and peripherals.

Computerised: To convert to a computer-based system, install or begin using a computer system to organise, control, or automate something.

Online: A computer connected to or accessible through a central computer or computer network.

Offline: Disconnected from a computer network; describes a computer terminal or peripheral device that is disconnected or operates independently of the attached computer or computer network.

Web: A complex structure or design. www: A computer-based network of information resources that includes text and multimedia. The information on the www can be accessed and searched via the internet, a global computer network.

A database is a collection of data organised for storage in computer memory and structured for quick access by authorised users.

Database Update: This simply implies applying and sustaining changes on a database after data must have been added, removed or modified

A system administrator is in charge of the maintenance and operation of a computer system.

Password: A secret code that a user must enter to gain access to a computer or its programmes. This consists of numbers, letters, special characters, or a combination of the aforementioned categories.
