DESIGN OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

The term “disaster management” refers to a set of operations meant to maintain control over catastrophe and emergency circumstances while also providing a framework for assisting at-risk individuals in avoiding or recovering from the disaster’s impact. Disaster management addresses situations that arise before, during, and after a disaster.

Globally, there have been several disasters on land, air, and sea; whether natural or man-made, they have resulted in the loss of lives and property costing billions of naira.

In Nigeria, there have been instances of earth earthquakes in Ogun state in 1994, multiple incidences of flooding have happened in Nigeria, in July 2012, 363 people were murdered, over 2,100,000 were displaced.

Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, and Benue states have all been hit. On July 2, 2012, severe rains hit many Nigerian coastal and inland cities, leaving people of Lagos state “gasping for breath” owing to flooding. In addition, there was gridlock on important roadways, forcing individuals to cancel or reschedule appointments.

Thousands of stranded commuters were forced to pay higher prices for the few bus drivers willing to risk their lives on the roadways, while the Nigerian government’s building work on the inner Oke-Afa Road paid a “heavy toll.” Flooding in the Ibadan metropolis in mid-July 2012 forced some Challenge, Oke-Ayo, and Eleyele residents to escape for their safety.

Flooding also stopped several Christians from attending morning church services, and a few bridges collapsed. The Nigerian government stated that certain structures on waterways had to be demolished as a result of the flooding, but Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bosun Oladele, declared that there were no casualties.

Although most calamities that Nigerians encounter, such as aircraft crashes, boat mishaps, floods, landslides, fires, oil spills, and so on, are often preventable.

Disaster is defined as an incident, natural or man-made, sudden or progressive, that has such a severe impact that the afflicted community or individual must respond with extraordinary measures.
