ABSTRACT

This experiment focused on determining the PH values of pure water sachets and borehole water samples collected in Benin City, Edo State. The five pure water samples analysed were ages, Maria, Faith, Mark, Uniben, and Uncle Sam. The five borehole samples analysed were from 8 Edo Street, Ugbowo, Block 25 Technical Estate No, 46 Jonathan Akpobarie Street, Ohlucky Street BDPA, No 8, Otahigbogiue Street, Off Adolor College Road, Ugbowo, and NO 3, 15th Street Off Estate Junction Road BDPA, all in Benin City. The PH analysis results reveal that the majority of clean water produced adheres to the WHO’s recommended PH range of 7.0 to 7.20. However, the outcome of the borehole samples PH analysis show acidic characteristics. Based on these findings, suitable recommendations were made.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

WHAT IS WATER?

Water is the most plentiful liquid on earth it covers three quarters of the world surface. Oceans cover wsout 72% of the earth and the average depth is 2.5 miles. The oceans are the source of 97% of all water. The remaining consist of 2.1% in glaciers, 0.6% fresh water in lakes and rivers 0.6% ground waters and 0.1% in brine well and brackish waters.

Water is a major component of living things; for example, a human adult contains 70% water, which is the same proportion as the earth’s surface. Water is a liquid, which is colourless, odourless and tasteless.

Human activities and settlements are dependent on the availability of water. Water makes up three-quarters of the fluid in the human body, and it serves as the primary medium for the chemical processes of his cells.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER

Our physical biological environment has a significant impact on water. As a vapour, it absorbs radiation to affect the thermal balance and temperature of the surroundings, bringing moisture into the confinement via the water cycle.

Human activities and settlement also have an impact on water availability, which is used as a medium for man’s waste, whether industrial, residential, or agricultural. Water is so crucial that it has a role in practically every human activity.

1.2 Statement of The Problem

The investigation found that some pure water sachets and borehole water have a lot of problems since they do not use the adequate or sufficient PH value recommended by NAFDAC.

As this has a direct impact on the general interest of consumers, both favourably and adversely, influencing overall achievement in pure water sachets and borehole water. As a result, the following questions deserve your attention.

1. Do pure water sachet companies in Benin City contain high acid content?

2. Does the borehole water contain too much acid?

3. Is the wastewater from the sewage plant correctly treated?

4. Are all clean water sachet companies registered with NAFDAC?

5. Does drinking water contain flavour, odour, or colour?

1.3 The purpose of the study

The purpose of this research is to examine and report on the pH values of sachet water samples and borehole water samples in Benin City.

Some of the drinking water has already been contaminated, which means that the packaging and nylons used to package the treated water have not been thoroughly tested.

This study also aims to assess the level of acidity in pure water sachets and borehole water, as well as if all pure water sachet companies are registered with NAFDAC.
