Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study.
Teenage pregnancy is defined as pregnancy in a girl aged 13 to 17 years (Drife, 2001).
Teenage pregnancy occurs when an underage female (typically between the ages of 13 and 19) becomes pregnant. (Grobler, 2003).
This may happen to both married and single girls of this age. The majority of teenagers become pregnant without having the necessary qualities to be mothers. As a result, individuals face numerous challenges and obstacles during the procedure.
This occurs in all communities, but is particularly prevalent in Nigeria’s northern regions. More emphasis will be made on the Chikun Community, where a lack of parental care and the practice of marrying off daughters at a young age has led to the community’s high rate of teenage pregnancies.
South Africa has an extremely high rate of adolescent pregnancy and motherhood. The mother’s average age is approximately 19 years. (Grobler, 2003). He discovered that the mortality and morbidity rates among the kids born to these women are high, and the moms are at significant risk of complications such as hypertension and intrapartum difficulties.
Teenage pregnancy is widespread in Kaduna State’s Chikun LGA. According to Ruth (2003), early sexual engagement causes health difficulties for young women, including anaemia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and longer labour. The infant is more likely to be born underweight, which increases the chance of prenatal mortality. (Wikipedia, 2009.
Teenage pregnancy makes them prone to unwanted parenting. In addition, women who have intercourse at a young age are more biologically vulnerable to a variety of sexually transmitted illnesses, including HIV/AIDS, than adult women. (Myles, 1999).
Many young females in our culture have lost hope as a result of adolescent pregnancy, due to the issues that come with it, particularly for small children.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Teenage pregnancy poses a health risk, and the majority of teenagers experience prolonged labour, Vesico Vaginal Firstula (VVF), and sometimes both the mother and the baby die during birth. Wikipedia (2009).
Teenage pregnancy has led to child maltreatment, the dumping of children in gutters, and numerous abortions. Wikipedia (2009).
1.3 The purpose of the study
The residents of the study region are unaware of the consequences of teenage pregnancy because there is no documented information on the subject in the area. As a result, this study will give recorded and relevant information about the effects of teenage pregnancy.
1.4 Significance of the Study
1. By the end of the study, the residents will be aware of the consequences of adolescent pregnancy and will no longer force their young daughters into early marriages.
2. The study will provide valuable information to both the state and local governments on how to manage or solve the issues caused by adolescent pregnancy.
3. The study will contribute to the existing literature on the issue for future students.
1.5 Justification for the Study
Teenage pregnancy caused many youngsters to drop out of school, and in other cases, their genitals were permanently scarred, causing great hardship.
The project will raise awareness about the implications of adolescent pregnancy among the residents of the study area and provide beneficial recommendations.
1.6 Aim of the Study
The overarching goal of this research is to investigate the impact of adolescent pregnancy on residents of the Chikun Community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
1.7 Specific objectives
1. Determine the reasons of teen pregnancy in the study area.
2. Determine whether culture contributes to teen pregnancy in the research location.
3. Identify persons in the study region who have experienced VVF or other issues as a result of teenage pregnancy.
4. Determine the number of people who died as a result of teen pregnancy in the research area.
1.8 Research Questions.
1. What are the factors that influence teenage pregnancies in the Chikun community?
2. How does culture influence teenage pregnancy in the Chikun Community?
3. What role does teenage pregnancy have in the development of VVF in teenagers?
4. What is the link between teenage pregnancy and the sudden death of many teenagers?
1.9 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to the Chikun Community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study also looked at the detrimental repercussions of teen pregnancy in the Chikun community.
1.10 Definition of Terms.
1. Child Abuse: Maltreatment of minors. (Yushufu, 2004)
2. Culture: This term refers to a community’s beliefs, habits, and social institutions. Wilcox (1999).
3. Disease: An imbalance in one or more cell components or the condition of a cell’s fluid. (omojaye, 2004).
4. Delinquency: A minor misdemeanour, particularly among children. (Wikipedia, 2009.
5. Early Marriage: Early marriage is described as a legal or illegal union between a man and a woman before the age of eighteen (18) or (below the usual age of childbearing) (Ruth, 2003).
6. HIV/AIDS (Human Immune Deficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
7. Health is defined as a condition of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than simply the absence of disease or disability (WHO, 2002).
8. Illiteracy: The inability to read and write. (Jonah, 2003).
9. Teenage: A young person aged 13 to 17 years (Myles, 1999).
10. Vesico-vaginal Fistula: An abnormal opening between the bladder and the vagina (Myles, 1999).
