DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA: CAUSES AND EFFECTS
FIRST PART
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Domestic violence has caused numerous problems in the lives of many Nigerians, including the separation of families and companions. For a very long time, Nigeria has been a very tranquil nation; the question is, where did everything go wrong?
As indicated by the demographic study, Ajegunle is a densely populated area in the centre of Lagos populated by individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds, primarily low-income families.
The majority of the residents of this area of Lagos are illiterate and of humble origin.
Domestic violence in Ajegunle is primarily a result of the region’s extreme destitution. Families struggle to feed and pay their children’s school fees; when parents are no longer able to provide for their children, the children engage in illegal activities such as stealing and other vices.
Some of the children become members of various cult groups; they begin to steal and kill in order to survive; when they are eventually apprehended by the police or killed by other cult groups, the entire debacle falls on their respective families.
On April 22, 2016, in Ajegunle, a group dubbed one million boys murdered a father and three of his sons. People who raised the alarm claimed that the boys were thugs sent by someone, but the truth is that nobody knows precisely what caused the death of the man and his three children; it could have been the fault of one of the sons, or they could have been attacked by thugs.
In this area of Lagos, domestic violence is increasing on a daily basis, families are not united, and parents cannot account for their children’s whereabouts, activities, and means of survival. The majority of children’s lives are shaped by the care and direction provided by their parents.
Most people in Ajegunle still adhere to the ancient custom of a man having multiple wives; in such households, if there is no compatibility of any kind, there will be a major family crisis.
As a consequence of Ajegunle’s overcrowding, the majority of its buildings lack privacy and have inadequate security, which can lead to misunderstandings between family members.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Domestic violence has been a thorn in the side of the majority of families in the Ajegunle local government area of Lagos; the federal government of Nigeria has always fought against domestic violence; if domestic violence is not controlled at an early stage, it can develop into a major crisis in Nigeria.
In the majority of Nigeria’s local regions, the federal government, families, and acquaintances are searching for a solution to this problem. The majority of parents do not begin correcting these issues until they are out of control.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION
What responsibilities do parents play in Ajegunle’s resolution of domestic violence?
What are the most probable causes of domestic violence in Ajegunle?
Does domestic violence have any significant impact on Nigeria’s socioeconomic growth?
Does the federal government’s intervention on the issue of domestic violence have a significant impact on Nigeria’s crisis level?
Does education aid in decreasing the impact of domestic violence?
What effect, if any, does family history have on domestic violence in Ajegunle?
Could the elevated poverty rate in this area be one of the primary causes of violence in Ajegunle?
1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
A high rate of destitution in Ajegunle is not the primary cause of domestic violence, according to the gender-specific mean responses of the respondents.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The research is intriguing, as it examines in depth the origins of domestic violence in Ajegunle, the most effective means of eradicating domestic violence in this area of Lagos, the impact of domestic violence on Nigeria’s socioeconomic development, and the role of education in resolving domestic violence in Ajegunle.
1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY
The scope of the investigation is limited to the causes and consequences of domestic violence in Nigeria.
1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY
Due to financial constraints, the researcher was unable to visit all areas of Ajegunle; however, he was able to obtain all the information necessary for the research project from the responses of respondents in Ajegunle, Lagos.
The research was involved in other departmental activities, such as attending lectures and completing other assignments, but was still able to meet the deadline for submitting the research work.
