DRUG ABUSE AND GUIDANCE SERVICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS COUNCIL IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELLING IN BORNO STATE

ABSTRACT
This is a survey investigation aiming to look into the elements that contribute to drug abuse in the Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State. To this goal, three objectives and three research questions were developed to lead the investigation. The three objectives were outlined as follows:-

(a) Identify the most commonly abused drugs and the factors that contribute to their abuse.

(b) Identify gender differences in drug abuse among secondary school pupils.

(c) Determine whether guidance services are offered. And the four research questions were:

d) Do secondary schools give any drug abuse advisory services? The study’s population consists of all secondary schools in Maiduguri, with about eight (8) secondary schools chosen through purposive sampling. About 160 teachers were chosen as respondents.

The study used a self-created questionnaire with dichotomous and like scale items. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics, and the findings revealed that the most widely abused drugs include tobacco, alcohol, valium, marijuana, and so on.

Also, there is no gender difference in drug abuse among secondary school pupils, and no advisory services are provided in secondary schools. The study suggests that school officials should educate pupils about the dangers of drug addiction more frequently, in addition to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency’s (N.D.L.E.A.) and National Agency for Food Drug Administrative and Control (NAFDAC) campaigns on such issues.

When it comes to drug misuse campaigns, school officials and entities in charge of drug control should be gender-sensitive. The Ministry of Education should engage the services of those who have experienced drug misuse and other social vices.
