The study’s population consisted of 250 schoolgirls from Bauchi Local Government. A stratified random sample was utilised to pick 100 schoolgirls. The data was acquired using a questionnaire created by the researchers.

The data was analysed using percentages and t-tests. The investigation found that early marriage was a factor in influencing girls’ educational attainment in Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

Most parents are unable to afford their daughters’ education fees, hence they accept early marriage. 58% of respondents agreed with the statement, 31% disagreed, and 11% were undecided.

Chapter one

Background Of the Study

The importance of girl child education cannot be overstated, given their function and standing in every culture. The education of a girl child is critical in all aspects of life. However, many people do not recognise this and encourage girl children to marry at a young age.

Early marriage occurs when a girl marries at a young age (between the ages of 12 and 18 years).

The rate at which young females marry at a young age in Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, could be attributed to social, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic variables. As determined by the inhabitants.

Marriage is thus a mutual agreement between a man and a woman to create a home. It demands complete agreement between man and woman, with no force. Marriage can be arranged by Islam, Christianity, tradition, or courtship. Everything must be agreed upon by both the guy and the lady.

Marriage, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is a legally binding connection between a husband and wife. Women, in particular, play a vital role in elevating the socioeconomic standards of society. They are the creator and focal point of the family.

They are also the primary caretakers of the society’s social, cultural, and fundamental values, and they are the most effective agents of long-term change.

Jibowu (1965) continued the call for good general education for women in her 1969 contribution to curriculum confidence on women’s education in Nigeria. Thus, according to her, their effect on children during their formative years is vital.

She noted that a youngster spends approximately six hours at school and eighteen hours at home. As a result, the male has a significant impact on him/her throughout the formative years, and a woman with a strong education greatly benefits a growing child.

According to A. Etimyomi, it is being investigated if the process of development, together with the accompanying socioeconomic changes and transformations, has affected women’s traditional roles as mothers and wives. The society today expects them to solve or assist their counterparts in resolving the majority of the challenges confronting the contemporary social system.

So, girls should have a good general education that will prepare them to deal with the majority of the problems that may arise in their lives.
Girl child education is low in most parts of Northern Nigeria due to parental and other reasons, including early marriage. Thus, attitude has had a significant social impact, including early marriage and divorce, which has increased the number of prostitutes. If a female divorces early in her marriage, she may struggle to find another husband in the future.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Early marriage in Bauchi Local Government Area has become a major issue. It has jeopardised both the state and federal government’s efforts to educate women in Nigeria. Education is vital for a country’s progress. It must educate both males and females.

The main issue was parental ignorance, particularly among moms, who did not understand the necessity of education. Because the majority of them are illiterate, they lack a clear desire to improve their education. They believe that getting married at an early age is more significant.
