Economics and Ethical Concerns for the Environment in Consumer Choices.

INTRODUCTION

The essay investigates individual action motivated by ethical concerns about the environment as a strategy for transitioning to more sustainable consumption.

The paper first uses a rational choice model to analyse independent consumer decisions among the commonly assumed self- and welfare-centered customers, and then extends the model to examine the implications of non-self- and welfare-centered reasons for consumer choice.

The article then uses a simple game-theoretic model to analyse interdependent consumer choices informed by self- and welfare-centered values before moving on to examine the implications of nonutilitarian environmental concerns for interdependent consumer choice within the same game-theoretic framework.

The essay finds that, while individual action may hold little promise when environmental concerns are widely shared, the case for collective action remains strong for both efficiency and equity considerations.
