CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Of all the modern agents of social change apart from industrialization and modernization, Western Education has had a most revolutionary impact on the society, especially when we consider its impact on the status and role of women.

Its revolutionary impact derives from the fact that is has enabled them more than ever before to take part in a wide range of socio-economic activities. It has indeed afforded them both at the individual and group levels the opportunity to increase their skill and capacity, and achieve greater freedom, responsibility, self-discipline and material well-being.

In the past, the idea of sending women to school was very unpopular, and in fact unrealistic. In addition, the question of exposing them to public activity was not allowed in many African Cultures/ their place was in the kitchen, and they were to be seen, not heard.

Many years ago too, a father who had an all female children was a sad man. In many parts of Nigeria, he was regarded as almost “childless”, because as the daughters married, they left the home empty. However, whether or not parents still feel this was depending on a number of factors.
