EFFECT OF CULTISM ON STUDENTS OF COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY

FIRST PART

INTRODUCTION

1.1 CONTEXT OF THE EXPERIMENT

The resurgence of the menace and aggressiveness of cult activities is the greatest and most humiliating problem confronting Nigerian universities today.

Clearly, cultism is considered the mother of crimes in tertiary institutions, and this phenomenon has had a negative impact on the image of our institutions, the learning quality, and the integrity of the grandparents.

According to Ogunade (2002), a secret cult is a confined, organized group devoted to a single cause. It is a closed group with a sacred ideology and a series of rituals revolving around their hidden symbols.

Occasionally, cult activities are replete with blood. It could be animal blood or human blood. He asserted that during rival group conflicts with universities and colleges, large amounts of blood are spilled, resulting in the loss of many lives.

Cultism is a ritual practice by a group of people whose membership admission, policy, and initiation formalities, as well as their mode of operation, are conducted in secret, with deleterious effects on both members and non-members. (Ajayi, 2015).

This initiative examines the multifaceted effects of secret cults in Nigerian universities, colleges, and polytechnics.

Thomas (2002) argued that confraternities in the 1950s did not engage in any level of violence. Sadly, they were later co-opted by military regimes eager to consolidate their control over university students who might challenge their authority. For instance, military authorities perceived robust student unionism as a menace to their consolidation of power.

Student unions and their anti-government activities were therefore neutralized by secret sects.

This project will examine the definition of secret cults, the history of secret cults in higher education institutions in Nigeria, the reasons why students join secret cults as well as their recruitment methods, as well as the danger of cultism and its remedy. However, attempts will be made to investigate the emergence of secret units from the perspectives of changes occurring within and outside universities.

According to Okwu (2006), as of September 2003, 5,000 students and faculty members had died due to cult-related violence on Nigerian campuses.

The pirates confraternity, also known as Sealord, was founded in 1952 as a student protest organization at the University of Ibadan.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE CHALLENGE

Violence has been a component of our political culture for a very long time, ever since our independence began with the western crises. Even during the democratic government of the second republic, the military government gave rise to extreme moral decadence in the society, where honor and integrity were no longer virtues to be respected.

In addition, university administration became autocratic, which encouraged cultism, which was often used to settle personal scores, and wars in the communities, which were traditionally fought at the level of intelligence and scholarship were reduced to fights with stones.

Even more perplexing is the callous manner in which security students use sophisticated weapons of mass destruction. These issues are Lauren to this research project. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the magnitude of this menace with a view to making suggestions for better academic communities in Nigeria, where the military seized power through violence. Politicians utilized cult members for personal gain and revenge.

Cultism is a social crime that is rife in universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics across the nation. However, it is a social menace that is not limited to institutions of higher education; it is a widespread phenomenon that characterizes the entire society, including secondary schools. According to Ogunade (2002), cultist activities are bloody affairs. It could be animal blood or human blood.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE EXAMINATION

This study will offer a perspective on cultism in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and how to address its associated issues. It will also attempt to suggest concrete ways to deal with the violence associated with organization student secret cults; moreover, the research will propose measures to ensure a permanent end to this type of violence in educational institutions.

To investigate the connection between cultism and violence among college students.

2. To propose methods for preventing or reversing cultist activities and practices in postsecondary institutions.

Assess the impact of cultism on students and faculty of postsecondary institutions.

To identify the factors that lead to cult activities and practices.

1.4 IMPORTANCE OF THE EVALUATION

Cultism and covert cult language are prevalent in contemporary Nigerian society. In almost all of our cities, the elderly, the middle-aged, the youth, and even small children use it freely.

Between 1983 and 1984, former military leader Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida coined the term “secret cult.” Before this time, these organizations were always known as fraternities.

In addition to shedding more light on the importance of curbing violence and slum cultism in all Nigerian tertiary institutions, the researcher will also highlight methods for protecting students in these institutions.

In addition, this research would be beneficial for all students at all levels of educational institutions who wish to learn why they should reduce violence and reject cultism.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Following are the research questions that will direct the investigation:

What threats does cultism pose to Nigeria’s tertiary institutions?

In what ways has cultism impacted the students?

How can cultist activities in our institutions be eradicated?

What factors contribute to the high rate of cultism in postsecondary institutions?

Does cultism have any positive and significant impact on student academic performance?

What are the purpose and benefits of being a member of a private society?

1.6 RADIUS OF EXAMINATION

The focus of this research will be the Federal College of Education, Osiele Abeokuta, which is located within the city limits of Abeokuta.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of cultism among Nigerian college students and the possible solutions. Due to the fact that our levels of exposure vary between individuals. It is nearly impossible to accurately and empirically document the number of crimes committed as a result of violence and clandestine cult activities.

As a result, possible crimes resulting from secret cults activities, such as rape, manslaughter, and others, are dispersed among such crimes as rape, manslaughter, and others based on the number of educational institutions in Nigeria today.
