EFFECT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON NATIONAL SECURITY

CHAPITRE ONE

Introduction

Background of The Study
Domestic violence is a threat to national security because it is a pattern of abusive behaviour in a relationship used by one person to achieve or retain power and control over another intimate partner (Office on Violence Against Women 2015).

Breiding (2014) defines an intimate partner as a present or previous married spouse, common-law or civil union spouse, domestic partner, boyfriend/girlfriend, dating partner, or ongoing sexual partner.

Furthermore, the term “national security” is frequently used to refer to safety from harm and protection against internal, external attack or infiltration. This usage is associated with defence and security forces.

The cold war era accorded the most weight to conventional security policy, which held that only a strong military could effectively deter attacks and threats of force (Chris, 1997).

John (1991), on the other hand, views security in terms of weaponry, armament, and military people. He defines security as “relative freedom from harmful threat.” In the post-Cold War era, the notion of security has drawn new thinking by current scholars who have rejected the militaristic view of security and have emphasised the concepts of rehabilitation, transformation, and expansion.

According to (Booth, 1991), “one of the themes of new thinking is the idea that security policy should have political accommodation as a primary goal, the adverse effects of identifying security almost exclusively with military strength were evident throughout the cold war.”

Statement of the Problem
Domestic violence has become an issue in Nigerian culture because to political and economic control of political positions and resources, which has a negative impact on national peace and security.

Despite the sanitization of domestic abuse by the government and local and international non-governmental organisations, additional work is expected to be done to analyse the impact of domestic violence on national security.

Based on the foregoing, the goal of this study is to examine domestic violence and national security.

Objectives of The Study
The primary goal of the research is to look into the impact of domestic violence on national security. The study specifically focused at the following goals:

To investigate the impact of various types of domestic violence on national security.

To investigate the root causes of domestic violence in Nigerian society.

to investigate elements that work against effective national security

Research Questions
The following are the research questions for the study:

How do various types of domestic abuse influence national security?

What causes domestic violence in Nigerian society, and what factors work against successful national security?

1.5 Research Theories

The following hypotheses were developed to guide the research.

Domestic violence in its various manifestations has no meaningful impact on national security.

Domestic violence causes have no substantial influence. Nigerian society’s national security

There is no discernible influence of elements that work against effective national security.

1.6 Significance of the Research

The Study is important in several ways. First, the study encourages residents to recognise that when they engage in domestic violence, it leads to a slew of crime-related difficulties in society.

The report encourages the government, private individuals, and collaborative groups to recognise that domestic violence has a proportional impact on national security challenges.

1.7 limitations of The study

This study focused on the relationship between domestic violence and national security in the Uyo local government region.

1.8 The Study’s Limitations

Because the study is unusual, it was also challenging to obtain materials, particularly relevant and current information about the study variables. As a result of the scarcity of relevant study resources in local publications, the researcher was forced to rely heavily on foreign materials in order to complete this work.

Another challenge was the researcher’s limited time to perform the investigation. This endeavour was further hampered by a lack of funds.
